CARY, NC (September 11, 2021) – North Carolina FC win over the visiting New England Revolution II, 4-1, in captain Nazmi Albadawi’s last match before entering retirement. Albadawi notched the brace in his final appearance, with Josh Coan and Jay Tee Kamara each adding individual goals to seal the result. Fifteen-year-old goalkeeper and recent signee Nicholas Holliday posted his first start at home in tonight’s contest, making several key saves to limit the Revolution to a single goal. Academy product Rohit Thakur also made his first team debut during the match. 

“Everything that could have been on display tonight in terms of what this night was about was on display,” said Head Coach John Bradford following the match. “We’ve got special recognition for a special player, Nazmi, and a great crowd that came out, lots of noise, the respect that he deserves for such a great career and for what he’s meant to our community, our club. The other thing on display tonight was Nicholas Holliday. [You] can’t think about this game without thinking about the performance that he put in, big save after big save in the second half especially. I think it’s easy for everyone to see the future that’s ahead of that young man.”

I’m excited for this new journey, but I’ll miss playing out here, especially on this field in front of our fans,” said Albadawi in a postgame interview. “There was a great turnout today, which I was very touched by. New England drew first blood in tonight’s match, as 16-year-old Esmir Bajraktarevic received a pass from teammate Connor Presley and dribbled with pace into the North Carolina FC box. Cutting the ball toward his left foot, Bajraktarevic put away his first goal of the season to give the Revolution a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. 

North Carolina FC was quick to respond with an equalizer, however, leveling with their opponent in the 16th minute. The scoring play began with Kamara, who attempted to slip a ball to Albadawi in the final third. Whilst en route to Albadawi, the ball deflected off of a New England defender and into the captain’s path. Albadawi put away his first goal of the season in his final match with North Carolina FC, deadlocking the score at 1-1. 

Coan gave North Carolina FC the go-ahead goal a mere ten minutes later, doubling the home side’s lead. Jackson catalyzed the attack, playing a pass into space for Coan. The match will be captain Nazmi Albadawi’s last with the club, as the veteran retires after an eight-year career that entailed time spent in the MLS, USL, and the NASL. Albadawi is one of the most accomplished players in club history, spending time with FC Cincinnati and North Carolina FC and representing Palestine on the international stage throughout his career. The Raleigh native plans to stay connected with the club as he continues to coach his 2011 and 2009 NCFC Academy teams. He has also accepted a full-time time sales role at a local technology company in Raleigh. 

“There are so many people to thank, and it is hard to cover everyone that has helped me throughout my career,” Albadawi said in a statement released via his social media. “To all my teammates that I have been blessed to play with, thank you for giving me some of my best memories and best friendships of my life. I have been fortunate enough to play with some amazing players, but more importantly, I have been blessed to meet such amazing people. The match featured Daniel Steedman’s club debut, a second-half spark from substitute Jay Tee Kamara, and a standout performance from Jake McGuire, who totaled four impressive saves throughout the game. 

“I think in critical moments we let ourselves down,” said Head Coach John Bradford following the match. “In terms of flow of play, we responded after giving up an early goal in both halves but I don’t think that response was good enough to get ourselves back into things. Daniel’s been a really positive addition to the group. To get him on the field and see him in a live game was great. He brings a lot of good things, like his athleticism and explosiveness, and once we figure out what position fits him best I think he’ll show what a bright future he has ahead of him. I feel bad for this group, because everybody trained incredibly well all week. It’s disappointing that we weren’t able to get out of this week what we put into it. The effort and the intensity that these guys continue to play with are still positives.”

Cary, NC (September 7, 2021) – NCFC Academy product Cole Frame has signed a professional contract with North Carolina FC, the club announced today. The deal is pending league and federation approval.

Frame has been a part of the club for over 13 years and now joins recent signee and teammate Nicholas Holliday, as another standout academy player to ink a professional contract with the club this season. The signing of these two young stars represents NCFC’s overall goal of developing young talent and investing in players with winning mentalities who will continue to make a positive impact on the club’s future success.

Since signing an amateur contract with North Carolina FC in March of this year, Cole Frame has appeared in 17 matches, clocking 827 minutes of playing time and scoring three goals. The midfielder made his professional debut against the Greenville Triumph earlier this season, coming in as a substitute in the second half. Since his first appearance with the team, Frame has been a member of the starting lineup six times and has also become an impactful player off the bench, logging two of his goals upon entering the match as a substitute. 

“I am thankful and excited to sign my first professional contract with North Carolina FC,” Cole Frame said. “For as long as I can remember my goal and dream has been to play professional soccer. I am grateful for the many coaches and teammates that have contributed to my development, along with the support I continue to receive from North Carolina FC. I am fortunate to be starting my professional career at the club I have been with since I was 7, and I am excited to see what we can accomplish now and in the future. It’s certainly a special moment that I will always cherish, but not for too long, as there is more work to be done!"

The 18-year-old first joined the NCFC youth program in 2009 and has continued to develop and compete through multiple levels of the club. Highlights of his career include winning the 2016 USYS National Championship with his U13 CASL Academy Juniors team, as well as the 2019 SuperCupNI Globe Cup Championship in Northern Ireland with NC Elite. Frame was first invited to train with North Carolina FC in 2019 as a U17 Academy Player. He has since continued to develop into a standout player, as he was recently named to the ECNL First Team All-Conference for his performance with the U19 NCFC Academy Team.

Union Omaha drew first blood in tonight’s match as Damia Viader received a ball inside the North Carolina FC box, taking a few quick touches in succession before sharply cutting the ball to his left foot. Now in at close range, the defender curved a shot towards the near post, converting the attempt despite a valiant diving effort from Jake McGuire. The goal was Viader’s third of the season, the second-highest number of goals scored on the Union Omaha roster behind forward Greg Hurst. 

Early into the second half, a Union Omaha attack was halted abruptly with a charge from McGuire. A penalty kick was awarded to the Owls as a yellow card was shown to McGuire, sparking some discourse from the North Carolina FC side, but to no avail as the penalty kick stood. Viader took the kick, scoring his second goal of the night to double Union Omaha’s lead. Ricky Rivera added Union Omaha’s third goal of the night in the 85th minute, heading in a cross from teammate John Scearce and bringing the score to 3-0.

CARY, NC (September 4, 2021) – North Carolina FC fell to the visiting Union Omaha, 3-0, in a chippy contest that saw five yellow cards between the two sides on Saturday night. The match featured Daniel Steedman’s club debut, a second-half spark from substitute Jay Tee Kamara, and a standout performance from Jake McGuire, who totaled four impressive saves throughout the game. The young squad will look to add to the win column in their next match against New England Revolution II on Saturday, September 11. 

“I think in critical moments we let ourselves down,” said Head Coach John Bradford following the match. “In terms of flow of play, we responded after giving up an early goal in both halves but I don’t think that response was good enough to get ourselves back into things. Daniel’s been a really positive addition to the group. To get him on the field tonight and see him in a live game was great. He brings a lot of good things, like his athleticism and explosiveness, and once we figure out what position fits him best I think he’ll show what a bright future he has ahead of him. I feel bad for this group, because everybody trained incredibly well all week. It’s disappointing that we weren’t able to get out of this week what we put into it. The effort and the intensity that these guys continue to play with are still positives.”

Union Omaha drew first blood in tonight’s match as Damia Viader received a ball inside the North Carolina FC box, taking a few quick touches in succession before sharply cutting the ball to his left foot. Now in at close range, the defender curved a shot towards the near post, converting the attempt despite a valiant diving effort from Jake McGuire. The goal was Viader’s third of the season, the second-highest number of goals scored on the Union Omaha roster behind forward Greg Hurst. 

Early into the second half, a Union Omaha attack was halted abruptly with a charge from McGuire. A penalty kick was awarded to the Owls as a yellow card was shown to McGuire, sparking some discourse from the North Carolina FC side, but to no avail as the penalty kick stood. Viader took the kick, scoring his second goal of the night to double Union Omaha’s lead. Ricky Rivera added Union Omaha’s third goal of the night in the 85th minute, heading in a cross from teammate John Scearce and bringing the score to 3-0.

CARY, NC (September 3, 2021) – North Carolina FC captain Nazmi Albadawi has announced his retirement from professional soccer after an eight-year career that entailed time spent in the MLS, USL, and the NASL. One of the most accomplished players in NCFC history, Albadawi spent time throughout his career with FC Cincinnati and North Carolina FC and has also represented Palestine on the international stage.

Albadawi’s final match with NCFC will be on Saturday, September 11 against New England Revolution II. Kick-off will be at 7 p.m. ET and tickets to that match can be purchased here. The club will also honor Albadawi as a part of the Carolina RailHawks Throwback Night on Saturday October 9 at 3 p.m. ET. Tickets to that match can be found here.

Following his retirement, Albadawi plans to stay connected with the club as he continues to coach his 2011 and 2009 NCFC Academy teams. He has also accepted a full-time time sales role at a local technology company in Raleigh. The club would like to thank Albadawi for his dedication throughout his influential career with North Carolina FC and wish him all the best in his retirement.

Prior to officially signing as a pro with the club, Albadawi played with the Carolina RailHawks U23's from 2012 and 2013, winning the USASA National Championship in 2013. He went on to sign a professional contract in 2014, making his professional debut on April 13 in the then-Carolina RailHawks 1-1 draw against Indy Eleven. In his first four seasons with NCFC, Albadawi appeared in 113 matches, scoring 21 goals and recording 19 assists, breaking the NASL single-season assist record with ten assists in 2016 and serving as captain of the squad from 2016-2017.

In early January of 2018, Albadawi signed a multi-year deal with FC Cincinnati of the USL Championship, for whom he scored eleven goals and recorded four assists in 27 games. During this time, the midfielder also made his debut on the international stage, scoring for Palestine in a 2-1 win against Pakistan. Since his international debut, Albadawi has registered nine caps for his country. Albadawi made his MLS debut for FC Cincinnati in 2019 in a match against the New York Red Bulls before returning to North Carolina FC on loan through the end of the 2019 season, signing a new contract with NCFC in November 2019 for the 2020 season. This season, Albadawi has made ten appearances for the club.

The deal is pending league and federation approval. The signing of Holliday is another significant step as North Carolina FC continues to focus on developing young talent and providing players the opportunity to play and succeed at the highest level.

Earlier this season, 15-year-old Holliday made history as the youngest goalkeeper to start in a USL Championship or League One match, as he made his professional debut on June 20 against the Chattanooga Red Wolves. Holliday would go on to face 37 shots throughout the match — a USL League One record — fourteen of which were on target, and ten of those were saves. With ten saves made in a single match, the Chapel Hill native is tied for the third-most saves made in a single match in USL League One history and is currently the youngest goalkeeper to start a professional USL match. 

“I am both thrilled and grateful to sign my first professional contract with NCFC,” Nicholas Holliday said. “Over the last several years NCFC has encouraged me through challenging competition, outstanding coaching, and a commitment to maximizing my individual development. Match highlights included a second consecutive clean sheet from Jake McGuire, who made a save, a catch and a punch to render the opponent scoreless through 95 minutes of play, as well as standout performances from Academy products Parker O’Ferral and Britton Fischer on the backline. Aziel Jackson also earned his first start for the club in tonight’s contest.

“I’m really proud of this group for earning a very solid result on the road tonight,” said Head Coach John Bradford following the match. “I felt our guys were up for the fight from the first minute and kept their concentration and intensity through the match. Tons of credit to the whole group on a strong defensive performance, but especially the young back four defenders and Jake. To earn a shutout on the road and make two clean sheets in four days is not easy in this league. I also thought we were effective in creating scoring opportunities and had our moments to win the game. North Carolina FC created several scoring chances in the final minutes of the second half, with Robert Kristo nearly flicking in a game-winner in stoppage time only to be denied with a diving save from Richmond goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald. As time expired, neither side was able to find a go-ahead goal, earning a point apiece. Captain Nazmi Albadawi won seven duels, created four chances, and completed two dribbles to earn the nod as USL League One’s Player of the Match. 

“I thought we dominated the game and were unlucky not to get the win,” said Albadawi. “Two shutouts in a row is a positive for the team to grow upon and if we can continue to play the way we have the last two games, we will be able to get some important wins.”

Cary, N.C. (August 27, 2021) – Midfielder Daniel Steedman has signed a professional contract with North Carolina FC for the remainder of the 2021 season, the club announced today. The deal is pending league and federation approval.

Steedman spent the 2020 season with Atlanta United 2, appearing in thirteen matches for a total of 331 minutes of playing time. The Glasgow, Scotland native was then selected 28th overall by Austin FC in the MLS SuperDraft, but ultimately did not sign with the team. In 2018, the midfielder joined the Charlotte Independence, playing in two regular-season matches and in one match during the US Open Cup. Steedman also played collegiately for the University of Virginia, logging minutes in 37 games, 28 of which were starts, and notching five goals and seven assists.

“We are excited to add Daniel Steedman to our NCFC roster for the remainder of the 2021 season,” Head Coach John Bradford said. “He is an aggressive, athletic attacking player that can play in a number of different roles.  He has qualities in front of goal that will help us in creating and scoring goals.  I have followed Daniel from his days at Charlotte Soccer Academy to UVA and now we’re glad to have him in our environment.”
