A Pig Pickin' is a Southern tradition and in 2012, the RailHawks introduced their Pregame Pig Pickin' Festival to Triangle area fans. The RailHawks will host the 4th annual Pig Pickin’ on July 18th before the RailHawks take on the reigning NASL Champions, the San Antonio Scorpions at WakeMed Soccer Park, and this year we want YOU to be a part of the competition. 

We are looking for amateur barbecuers to compete for the title of RailHawks Barbecue Champion. This year’s prizes include a team-signed RailHawks Jersey, recognition on field at halftime, four vouchers to a RailHawks game of your choice, and the new RailHawks Hog Helmet Trophy!

All participating cooks, both amateur and professional, will compete by sampling their pig and sauce to be voted on by local BBQ owners, chefs and a surprise celebrity judge

The Wine Festival will begin at 5:30 pm and will feature a variety of wines from across the globe along with local samples from right here in North Carolina.  Featured brands provided by Triangle Wine Company and Adams Vineyard will include Marc Cellers Pinot Noir, Lujon Syrah, and local brands Revolution Red and Clara Breeze Reserve, just to name a few of the many brands highlighted throughout the festival. The Chef’s Academy and Backyard Bistro will be providing food samples paired perfectly with the wine samples, and ReverbNation will provide the musical stylings of local band Boss Nacho.  In addition to wine, North American Spirits will be hosting a free Ciroc Vodka tasting.

The RailHawks are adding strength to their roster with the signing of local talent Dominic Jensen. Jensen will be available for selection until the fall 2015.

Following in the footsteps of Matthew Gianfortone and D.J. Mason, Jensen also played for the U-18 Academy team and is now joining the RailHawks roster.

“Dominic is an excellent passer who knows how to read the game,” said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. “He has earned the right to be part of the first team and we look forward to see him develop as a professional.”

The Raleigh native plays as a midfielder and has committed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for this upcoming fall. Jensen attended Leesville Road High School in Raleigh.

Jensen has received many honors including the award for 2012 ESPNHS Player to Watch.  In addition, in 2012 Jensen was chosen to participate in the Adidas Real Madrid Select International Training Program. In 2010, Jensen was a member of the U-14 U.S. Soccer National team, adding on to his list of honors.

The RailHawks roster is now comprised of 29 players: three goalkeepers (Hunter Gilstrap, Brian Sylvestre, and Akira Fitzgerald), eight defenders (Connor Tobin, Daniel Scott, Austen King, Kupono Low, Mamadou Danso, Wes Knight, Blake Wagner, and D.J. Mason),  eleven midfielders (Nazmi Albadawi, Tiyi Shipalane, Leo Osaki, Neil Hlavaty, Mark Anderson, Austin da Luz, Chris Nurse, Jack Coleman, Jamie Dell, Matthew Gianfortone, and Dominic Jensen) and seven forwards (Nacho Novo, Simone Bracalello, Wells Thompson, Mamadee Nyepon,  Bradlee Baladez, Dzenan Catic, and Tyler Engel). 

Jensen and the Carolina RailHawks will take on Minnesota United FC at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, June 6th, at 7:30 pm.

The Carolina RailHawks will host Charlotte Independence in the third round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at WakeMed Soccer Park on Wednesday, May 27th at 7:30 PM ET.

Charlotte Independence, a member of the United Soccer League, defeated Upward Stars 2-0 in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to earn the right to play the RailHawks. The RailHawks, who automatically qualified for the third round, will be looking to renew the historic rivalry that has been in place between Charlotte and The Triangle for several years.

Alex and Enzo Martinez, two former RailHawks and RailHawks U-23 players, as well as forward Daniel Jackson will be making a return trip to WakeMed Soccer Park playing for the Independence.

This will be the RailHawks’ seventh appearance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, a knockout style tournament that first began in 1914. The RailHawks have thrived in the past in this tournament advancing to the semifinals in the 2007 season and to the quarterfinals in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

A major factor in the RailHawks’ success has been the ability to beat MLS teams in this tournament. They defeated the Chicago Fire in 2007 and the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2012, 2013, and 2014.

The winner of this match will advance to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and travel to Massachusetts to take on the New England Revolution on June 17th at Harvard Stadium.  

The team will continue NASL action at 7:30 pm ET on Saturday, May 30th at Jacksonville Armada FC. The RailHawks will return to WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, June 6th at 7:30 PM ET to take on Minnesota United FC.

The RailHawks announced the re-signing of goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald for the remainder of the 2015 Spring Season.

“We are thrilled to have Akira back,” said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. “He is a former RailHawks player who knows the culture of the team and is aware of the high expectations we always have.”

Fitzgerald first joined the RailHawks as a member of the RailHawks U-23 Program before signing his first professional contract in July of 2011. During his four seasons with the RailHawks, he appeared in 48 matches, and logged 4,320 minutes.

Fitzgerald played his collegiate soccer at Wake Forest University, where he started 69 out of 71 matches. He logged nearly 6,300 minutes with the Demon Deacons. He finished his collegiate career ranked third in school history in career goals against average (0.83), fourth in saves (237), third in save percentage (.803) and second in minutes played (6,296).

Fitzgerald joined MLS’ New York City FC on Dec. 11, 2014. The 27-year-old made two appearances for the Club during their first-ever preseason; he came on as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 win over St. Mirren on February 10th and started against the Houston Dynamo in the Carolina Challenge Cup on February 24th.

The Carolina RailHawks strengthened their roster on Friday by signing Capital Area RailHawks Academy defender D.J. Mason to an amateur contract. Mason will be available for selection for the remainder of the 2015 Spring Season.

Local player development and rewarding talented home-grown players has been a common theme for the RailHawks.  Matthew Gianfortone was signed two weeks ago from the U-18 Academy Team, and Mason is following in his footsteps as the RailHawks work on developing local talent.

“Mason is another young and talented player from our Academy that we decided to add to the roster,” said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. “We will continue to add players that can grow with the team. Mason has a great attitude, is willing to learn and I am sure he has a bright future.”

The Morrisville, N.C. native is a product of the Capital Area RailHawks U-18 Academy Team and plays as a right back. Last February, Mason played for the U-18 US Men’s National Team in the 2015 Copa Chivas Tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. Mason started and played in one game of the tournament where he recorded 70 minutes.

The Capital Area RailHawks Academy is a collaboration between the Capital Area Soccer League and the RailHawks for U.S. Soccer Development Academy teams in the U-13/14, U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups and is designed to attract the highest caliber players and coaches possible, regardless of their previous club affiliations. 

Mason is the fifth U-17/18 Academy player to join the first team, after Dre Fortune, Matthew Gianfortone, Evan Krause and Conor Donovan.  They have been identified as players deserving of the opportunity to train and play with the RailHawks professional squad and be exposed to a professional training and playing environment.

Academy players are eligible to train and play with professional soccer players prior to their enrollment in college and keep their NCAA eligibility.  Mason has committed to join UNC-Chapel Hill Men’s Soccer program next fall.

The RailHawks roster is now comprised of 26 players: two goalkeepers (Hunter Gilstrap, Brian Sylvestre, and Matt  Perrella), eight defenders (Connor Tobin, Daniel Scott, Austen King, Kupono Low, Mamadou Danso, Wes Knight, Blake Wagner, and DJ Mason), ten midfielders (Nazmi Albadawi, Tiyi Shipalane, Leo Osaki, Neil Hlavaty, Mark Anderson, Austin Da Luz, Chris Nurse, Jack Coleman, Jamie Dell and Matthew Gianfortone) and five forwards (Nacho Novo, Simone Bracalello, Wells Thompson, Mamadee Nyepon, and Bradlee Baladez).

U.S. Soccer announced the Third Round pairings for the 102nd Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with the RailHawks hosting the Third Round on Wednesday, May 27th at WakeMed Soccer Park.  The RailHawks will host the winner of the Second Round match between the Upward Stars (NPSL) and Charlotte Independence (USL).

"The US Open Cup is a competition we take seriously," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "We've had great success and a lot of great results over the years, so we are definitely looking forward to start with this year's competition."

Season ticket holders already have tickets to this match as part of their season ticket package. Season ticket holders must use their GAME A ticket for this match. The Carolina RailHawks strengthened their roster on Friday by signing Capital Area RailHawks Academy midfielder Matthew Gianfortone to an amateur contract. Gianfortone will be available for selection for the remainder of the 2015 Spring Season.

Local player development and rewarding talented home-grown players has been a common theme for the RailHawks.  Gianfortone follows in the footsteps of Conor Donovan who last year as a U-18 C.A. RailHawks Academy player scored a goal in the RailHawks 2-1 win over Puebla FC of the Mexican Liga MX.

“Matthew is a young and vibrant player. We have a lot of confidence in him,” said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. “We are delighted to promote players from within the organization because it encourages young talent to always do their best and aim for challenging goals.”  

The youngster is a product of the Capital Area RailHawks U-18 Academy Team and plays in central midfield. He previously captained the CASL Elite region 3 team in 2012 and was Varsity Cap 8 All-Conference in that same year. Prior to this, Gianfortone played for the CASL Chelsea U-14 Academy team in 2011 and won the 2011 Jefferson Cup.

The Capital Area RailHawks Academy is a collaboration between the Capital Area Soccer League and the RailHawks for U.S. Soccer Development Academy teams in the U-13/14, U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups and is designed to attract the highest caliber players and coaches possible, regardless of their previous club affiliations. 

Gianfortone is the fourth U-17/18 Academy player to join the first team, after Dre Fortune, Evan Krause and Conor Donovan.  They have been identified as players deserving of the opportunity to train and play with the RailHawks professional squad and be exposed to a professional training and playing environment.

Academy players are eligible to train and play with professional soccer players prior to their enrollment in college and keep their NCAA eligibility.  Gianfortone has committed to join UNCW Men’s Soccer program next fall.

“This is a reward for Matthew, he has been part of the program for a number of years and has worked extremely hard,” said Capital Area RailHawks Academy Director and U-18’s Head Coach John Bradford. “Matthew is an example of the continuity the program has had and the faith the coaching staff and front office have in it, as well as the quality of players we are producing.”
