CARY, N.C. (Aug. 11, 2017) – North Carolina FC (7W-4D-7L, 4th place) will aim to keep its momentum and improve its chances of earning a NASL playoff berth with a match against the Jacksonville Armada (6W-7D-5L, 5th place) on Saturday, Aug. 12 at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park at 7:30 p.m. The match will be presented by PNC.
On the heels of a massive win over Miami FC and four results in its last five matches, NCFC has jumped to the top of the Fall Season table and moved to fourth in the combined standings. The club has seen consistency on its backline and boosted its attacking play with the signing of several new players.
Jacksonville has struggled as of late, failing to win once in its last five matches. The club has secured three draws, but is coming off a 1-0 loss to Puerto Rico FC in its last time out. During the mid-season break, Jacksonville traded Danny Barrow and Jonathan Glenn to North Carolina FC for veteran forward Brian Shriver. Jacksonville’s visit will be the first time the trio of players will face their former teams since being traded.
NCFC has already seen its mid-season acquisitions pay off, as Glenn netted his first goal for the club against Miami FC last weekend. Barrow has yet to make an appearance, while new signings – right back D.J. Taylor and forward Renan Gorne – are also waiting in the wings to make their official debut.
North Carolina will aim for another successful home outing against the Armada, after Jacksonville’s visit on May 13 resulted in a 3-1 win for NCFC. Overall, the club has never lost a home match to Jacksonville, posting a 3W-1D-0L record against the club at home.
Last Time Out:
A stoppage-time game winner from Christian Ibeagha led North Carolina FC to a dramatic 3-2 victory over NASL Spring Season Champions Miami FC on Aug. 5. NCFC also had goals from Jonathan Glenn and Marcel Kandziora in the victory.
Players to Watch:
No. 16 Dre Fortune
Fortune started the season as a reserve midfielder, but has worked his way into the starting lineup as of late. The Raleigh native has helped control the game in the middle of the pitch for NCFC. He’s scored one goal in 201 minutes and completed 90 percent of his passes this season.
No. 17 Brian Shriver
NCFC will face a familiar foe in Brian Shriver. The veteran attacker was recently traded to Jacksonville in exchange for two players. Shriver left NCFC as the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 35 goals (27 NASL, 8 U.S. Open Cup). Shriver has appeared in two matches for Jacksonville since being traded. Look for the forward to test NCFC’s defense throughout the match with his natural goal-scoring ability.
Coming Up Next:
North Carolina FC will face a short turnaround with a match against Miami FC on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. Tickets are available online or over the phone by calling the North Carolina Football Club Ticket Office at 919.458.8144.
