GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 17, 2017) – North Carolina FC rolled to a 6-1 win over the Carolina Dynamo in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night. The six goals mark the most NCFC goals scored this season and are tied for the most goals scored in the Open Cup in club history. Billy Schuler led the team with a second-half brace, while Brian Shriver, Matt Fondy, Tiyi Shipalane and Jon Orlando all scored a goal in the offensive clinic.
“I’m delighted. These matches are never easy,” said head coach Colin Clarke. “I thought we’ve done a very professional job. The first goal is always going to be important. Once that happened, it opened up for us even more and the game was effectively over for us at halftime.”
NCFC has advanced to host a third-round matchup against the Charlotte Independence on Wednesday, May 31st at 7:30 p.m. at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Shriver broke the deadlock early with a clinical finish in the 27th minute. He took a pass from Fondy inside the box and buried his shot into the top right corner of the goal. The finish was his team-leading eighth career U.S. Open Cup goal.
NCFC added two quick goals in the 37th and 40th minutes to take a 3-0 lead. Fondy got behind the Dynamo defense via a pass from Orlando and dribbled into the box before adding a collected finish over the keeper for the team’s second goal of the game.
Just three minutes later, Shipalane got in on the action after Fondy dribbled to the end line and found Shipalane waiting at the six-yard line. The midfielder scored his fourth career Open Cup goal and put NCFC up 3-0.
Shortly after halftime, NCFC scored its fourth, as Billy Schuler took advantage of a goalkeeper error and buried his first of the match.
In the 57th minute, Orlando pushed the score to 5-0 with his first goal of the season off an assist from Shipalane.
The Dynamo prevented the shutout with a goal in the 74th minute, as Justen Shear scored off a cross from Danny Elliott.
Schuler added the final goal in the 85th minute off an assist from Shriver. The goal was his third of the season and fourth Open Cup goal of his career.

NCFC’s lineup featured a mix of experience and youth, as Open Cup veterans Brian Shriver and Tiyi Shipalane started alongside Macklin Robinson, Marcel Kandziora and Dre Fortune, who all made their first start for NCFC.
Matt Fondy returned to the starting lineup and immediately made an impact with two assists and a goal in 45 minutes of action.
Brian Shriver, NCFC’s top goal scorer in the U.S. Open Cup, started up front and extended his goal scoring lead with a goal in the 27th minute, bringing him to eight goals in U.S. Open Cup history. He also added an assist late in the match.
Billy Schuler scored his third and fourth Open Cup goals with a second-half brace. Schuler has recorded three goals and an assist in his last three matches.
In addition to making his first start of the season, Jon Orlando scored his first goal of the season and the second Open Cup goal of his career.
