Match Preview:
North Carolina FC is ready to continue the 2017 NASL season and their championship push against NASL expansion club, the San Francisco Deltas.
North Carolina FC will be wearing black arm bands in memory of Gary Sikes, a long time season ticket and Triangle Soccer Fanatics member who passed away last weekend.
NCFC returned much of its key core, including 2016 NASL Best XI and modern- era NASL all-time single-season assist leader Nazmi Albadawi, Matt Fondy, Brian Sylvestre, Connor Tobin and Austin da Luz. Fondy broke out as the club’s leading goal scorer in 2016, with seven goals and two assists.
San Francisco is matching up with NCFC for the first time ever, and most recently played to a March 25 1-1 draw against Indy Eleven. NCFC and the Deltas will be fresh, as they are both coming off bye weeks ahead of the match. San Francisco’s Tommy Heinemann will be a familiar face for the club, as the forward scored six goals for North Carolina FC in 2010.
Last Time Out:
North Carolina FC played to a 1-1 draw against Miami FC to open the 2017 season. Matt Fondy picked up where he left and provided the team their lone goal in the 4th minute with a quick shot that found its way past Miami goalkeeper Mario Daniel Vega.
The defense did well to hold Miami to one goal, with defender Connor Tobin making the NASL Team of the Week for his efforts in the match, along with Matt Fondy. Miami’s goal came in the 14th minute as Kwadwo Poku netted a rebound. Overall, Sylvestre made four saves.
Players to watch
#9 Matt Fondy
As NCFC’s leading goal scorer in the 2016 NASL Season, Fondy was a great mid-season addition to the club. With his seven goals and two assists, he boosted the club’s offense and provided consistency in his ability to create havoc on the field. Fondy has proved his worth as a goal scorer, time and time again, as he was the 2015 USL Golden Boot winner. The dangerous forward looked on point in the NCFC Home Opener, by not only providing the club with its first goal of the 2017 season, but by also having two other shots, four duels won and one interception.
#10 Kyle Bekker
In the Deltas’ inaugural game, Bekker scored the club’s first-ever goal againsttheIndyEleveninthe31st minuteoffacrossfromteammate Danny Cruz. The midfielder was named to the NASL Best XI of the Week and was also named the NASL Player of the Week for his efforts in the match against the 2016 runner-up to the Championship.
