Cary, NC (June 15, 2016)- The Carolina RailHawks suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Major League Soccer's New England Revolution, falling 1-0 in extra time after two hours and 15 minutes of weather delay in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Haitian midfielder Zachary Herivaux, making his first start for the Revs, scored the lone goal early in extra time, eliminating the RailHawks from the tournament.
"I’m very very proud of the team tonight," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "We came off a tough game this past weekend, I thought the response was superb, we played well. We thoroughly deserved to win the game, and we didn’t. We didn’t take our chances and they shot from distance late into the game. I thought we were by far the better team for the course of the 120 minutes and should be through to the next round so I’m disappointed."
The RailHawks came out strong out of the delay in the 14th minute with an exciting cross from Brian Shriver to Matt Watson whose shot went wide. Carolina’s defense played a crucial role throughout the match as outside backs Drew Beckie and Paul Black made several runs down the flank to actively participate in the RailHawks’ attack.
New England had an opportunity in the 25th off of a free kick outside the box. The wet conditions proved troublesome for RailHawks goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald who bobbled the shot, but regained control immediately after.
Carolina’s best chance came in the 33rd minute as Marvin Ceballos switched fields from the right side, hitting his target, midfielder Austin da Luz, perfectly. Da Luz then found Brian Shriver’s feet whose one-touch shot skimmed the crossbar.
After a scoreless first half, both teams continued to bring the pressure. In the 70thminute, Black pushed forward and took a powerful shot on frame that forced Knighton to make a big save.
The Revolution also had several opportunities in the second half, most notably a deflection by Fitzgerald that resulted in a shot from Juan Agudelo that went just wide.
Neither teams could score after 90 minutes, sending the match into extra time. New England finally found the net in the 93rd minute. Herivaux nailed a shot from just outside the box that was out of Fitzgerald’s reach in the top right corner.
Carolina’s Alex Pérez nearly scored in the 17th minute of extra time from the top of the box, but Knighton was there to make the save. Pérez made a second effort in the final seconds of the match but once again, Knighton stopped the shot.
