The player RailHawks fans have designated as Mr. RailHawk will return for the 2013 season. Defender, Kupono Low, has re-signed with the RailHawks and is now the last member of the inaugural RailHawks squad from 2007 still on the 2013 roster. With his name listed throughout the RailHawks record books, Low may be most known as a staple at left-back and having the designation as scoring the first goal in franchise history on April 21, 2007.
“Kupono is a consummate pro and is someone that every coach would want on his team,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the lineup and has been one of the top players in our league for a number of years.”
Low began his professional career with the Syracuse Salty Dogs in 2004 before moving to Ireland to play with Sligo Rovers for two seasons. Upon returning to the U.S., Low joined the Virginia Beach Mariners where his path would cross with Colin Clarke for the first time. Since joining the RailHawks in 2007, Low has received numerous team awards and has been named as part of the All-League team four times. In 2011, the 34 year old defender tallied a total of 2,326 minutes played and as a member of the RailHawks has only missed postseason play once, in 2008.
Low would cross paths with Clarke once more as Low made his international debut playing for the Clarke-managed Puerto Rico national team. He scored his first international goal against Trinidad and Tobago in January 2008. Low earned three caps before modified eligibility requirements ended his career.
Low and the RailHawks will open the NASL Spring Season on Saturday, April 13 with the Grand Opening of the New WakeMed Soccer Park as the RailHawks host league foe FC Edmonton. On February 24, the RailHawks will host, 2012 MLS Playoff participant, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in the 5th Annual Hilton Garden Inn Durham Southpoint Community Shield Match.
