
The North Carolina Football Club has over 90 soccer players with ties to the club’s NCFC Youth Academy or North Carolina FC U23 team taking part in college soccer this season. The 2017 men’s college soccer season kicked off this past weekend and plenty of former NCFC Youth Academy and U23 players made impacts for their respective teams.
Academy Standouts Open Career with Goals:
It was a big weekend for former NCFC Youth Academy players making college debuts. Manny Perez of NC State and Alex Rose of UNC Chapel Hill both notched goals over the weekend and helped lead their respective schools to victory. Perez has already scored twice this season and added the game-winning goal over Florida Atlantic, as well as a goal against William and Mary. Rose also got on scoresheet, finding the back of the net against Rutgers.
UNC-Wilmington Starts Season with Undefeated Weekend
With 10 former Academy members on the squad, UNCW has the most former Academy members on its team in the country. Several from the group helped the Seahawks earn victories over Jacksonville and North Florida.
Ryan Cretens earned a shutout in a 2-0 win over Jacksonville and tallied five saves in the Seahawks’ 3-2 victory over North Florida to complete the undefeated weekend. Jamil Gracia, Huntley Munn, Kalvin Kromer, Matt Gianfortone and Ben Fisher all earned playing time in both Seahawks’ wins. Fisher added a goal and an assist and Kromer tallied two assists during the weekend to earn Mike Gibbs Memorial All-Tournament Team honors.
NC State Splits Opening Matches
The NC State men’s soccer team boasts eight former Academy members and six current and former U23 members on its squad. The Wolfpack opened the season with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Florida Atlantic before falling 3-2 in overtime at William and Mary.
Academy star Manny Perez has struck twice – once in each match – for his hometown team. The Wolfpack also got contributions from former U23 members Ade Taiwo (two assists) and Clayton Sparks (one goal). Caleb Duvernay, an Academy and U23 player, has started both matches for the Pack.
UNC Rolls Past First Two Opponents
The No. 4 UNC Chapel Hill squad looks set for a strong season, after the team jumped out to big opening wins over the weekend. The team downed No. 12 Providence 4-2 before defeating Rutgers 6-1.
NCFC U23 member John Nelson scored the first goal of the Tar Heels’ season, while Jeremy Kelly, who has played for the Academy and spent time with the first team on an amateur contract, provided an assist in the victory over the Friars.
In the Tar Heels win over Rutgers, Kelly and Alex Rose scored, while Nelson and Drew Murphy (NCFC U23) picked up assists.
Duke Starts Season with Shutout Victories
Duke opened its season with shutout victories over UCF and Fordham behind key contributions from Academy and NCFC U23 players. NCFC U23 goalkeeper Will Pulisic has earned the starting nod in goal as a freshman and collected two shutouts to open the season. His play also earned him a spot on Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week.
Senior forward and former U23 player Brian White added a brace in Duke’s win over Fordham. Cody Brinkman, who has come up through the club’s Academy and U23 teams, started both matches in the midfield for the Blue Devils. Brinkman was also presented the Farouk Bseiso award by North Carolina FC over the weekend.
Charlotte Downs Winthrop
No. 15 Charlotte edged Winthrop 1-0 in a match that featured former Academy players on both sides. Academy standout and NCFC U23 star Ryan Spaulding led Charlotte’s attack with eight shots, including four on target. NCFC U23 teammate Dean Rutherford also earned playing time for Charlotte, while 2013 Academy graduate, Kenneth Perkinson, made 10 saves between the posts for Winthrop.
Elon Draws Fordham, Downs UCF
Academy graduates, Elijah Agu, Mikey Thomas and John Walden helped lead Elon to a draw against Fordham and a win over UCF during the opening weekend. Agu tallied Elon’s lone goal of the weekend. Thomas started both matches, while Walden started in the Elon’s win over UCF.

- Cooper Duplantis (NCFC U23) played the entire 110 minutes in VMI’s 2-2 draw with Longwood.
- After a season with the NCFC U23 squad, Steeve Pouna led No. 17 Baker University (NAIA) to a 2-0 season-opening win over the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma with the first goal of the season for his squad.
- Chase Rhode (NCFC U23) played the full 90 minutes in UC Davis’ 3-1 win over San Francisco.
- Bardia Asefnia (NCFC Youth Academy & NCFC U23) earned two wins and one shutout in goal with UMass, as the Minutemen defeated Saint Francis and Sacred Heart.
- Nacho Miras (NCFC U23) made seven saves on his Valparaiso debut and added five saves in a 1-1 draw with Michigan.
- Appalachian State defender Ian Bennett (NCFC U23) saw action in both the Mountaineers’ first matches.
