At halftime, NCFC will honor club legends Kupono Low and Tiyi Shipalane, both of whom hold numerous NCFC all-time records from their playing days. 

NCFC (14W-9L-8D, 50 points) holds seventh place in the Eastern Conference and most recently defeated Ottawa Fury FC 3-1 last weekend. Head coach Dave Sarachan’s team saw its place in the postseason confirmed when Swope Park Rangers defeated Birmingham Legion FC Monday evening, guaranteeing NCFC a top-10 finish. 

But with three regular-season matches remaining, NCFC has its sights set on as high of a postseason seed as possible, with sixth-place Louisville City FC just one point ahead and fifth-place Indy Eleven six points ahead. 

A tough test awaits NCFC this weekend, however, with NYRB II (17W-8L-6D, 57 points) in town. Saturday’s visitors are currently in third place, but have spent most of the season either in the first or second spots. NCFC earned a 2-1 win in the first meeting between the two teams on May 24, powered by goals from center back Sam Brotherton and midfielder Steven Miller. 

Last time out, NYRB II was just seconds away from securing a home win against the Charleston Battery, but conceded a 96th-minute equalizer and settled for a 1-1 draw. Coached by John Wolyniec, NYRB II boasts a plethora of young talent, including leading scorer Jared Stroud. The 22-year-old midfielder has scored 14 goals to help pace the Eastern Conference’s most prolific offense (70 goals). 

Not far behind in terms of offensive production is NCFC, which ranks fourth in the Eastern Conference with 54 goals. Once again playing at home, NCFC will attempt to hand NYRB II a third consecutive road defeat. On the season, NCFC is an impressive 9W-1L-5D at WakeMed Soccer Park, has the second-highest home goal differential in the Eastern Conference and has scored three-plus goals in each of its last four home games. 

Perhaps the most well-balanced side in the USL Championship, NCFC features five players with six-plus goals. Midfielder Steven Miller, in the midst of a career season, leads the team in both goals (nine) and assists (six). But there's a logjam of capable scorers behind him, including forwards Donovan Ewolo and Robbie Kristo and midfielder Dre Fortune, who each have seven goals apiece. Defensively, NCFC has consistently received high-level performances from goalkeeper Alex Tambakis, who has six clean sheets and 79 saves in 2019. 

Last Time Out 

Despite falling behind in just the third minute, NCFC showed resiliency and fought back to earn a 3-1 home win against Ottawa Fury FC. 

After goalkeeper Alex Tambkis did well to keep it a one-goal match heading into halftime, NCFC struck for three goals after the break, including center back Sam Brotherton’s 53rd-minute headed equalizer. As the match progressed, head coach Dave Sarachan made a pair of changes, inserting both midfielder Manny Perez and forward Robbie Kristo. That decision proved to be wise, as Perez assisted on both Kristo’s 82nd-minute go-ahead goal and midfielder Nazmi Albadawi’s 90th-minute tally, which all but secured victory for NCFC.

North Carolina FC – #27 DJ Taylor
The young right back plays a crucial role in head coach Dave Sarachan’s setup, as he’s counted on for both tracking back defensively and also getting forward in the NCFC attack. When at his best, Taylor can keep athletic wingers and forwards in check while also stressing opposing backlines with his runs up the right flank. Taylor, who recorded his fourth assist two weeks ago in Charleston, is coming off a strong performance against Ottawa Fury FC.   

New York Red Bulls II – #25 Mathias Jørgensen
The 19-year-old Danish forward is one of the many promising young players included in the NYRB II squad. Last time out against Charleston, Jørgensen became the third player on his team to reach the 10-goal milestone this season. Jørgensen previously played for Odense Boldklub, one of the most successful clubs in Denmark, before making the switch to New York Red Bulls. Jørgensen already has MLS experience under his belt and will certainly have NCFC’s attention on Saturday.

Da Luz previously announced in August his intentions to retire following the 2019 USL Championship season. The longtime fan favorite is in his 10th professional season, eight of which have been with NCFC. A constant fixture in the NCFC lineup throughout his tenure, da Luz ranks among the club’s top 5 in all-time games played (184), minutes (13,178), goals (23) and assists (18) across all competitions, consistently making a difference in the midfield. 

The Wake Forest University product played in Major League Soccer from 2010-11 with New York Red Bulls and D.C. United before joining NCFC in 2012. Upon arriving, da Luz made an immediate impact, helping NCFC reach the semifinals of the 2012 NASL postseason. In both 2012 and 2013, da Luz played a key role in NCFC’s runs to the fourth round and quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, respectively. In 2013, da Luz scored in NCFC’s 2-0 defeat of the LA Galaxy. 

The longest-tenured player on NCFC, da Luz in April 2018 became the sixth player in club history to reach the 10,000-minute milestone. Additionally, da Luz set or tied single-season personal highs in games played (34), minutes (2,880) and goals (six) in 2018. After serving as co-captain in 2018, da Luz was made club captain ahead of the 2019 season. 

In 2017, da Luz created Playing for Pride, a global fundraiser to benefit the Human Rights Campaign and draw attention to LGBTQ issues. For his efforts, da Luz was named as the 2017 NASL Humanitarian of the Year. Using his platform as a professional soccer player to make a difference, da Luz has helped Playing for Pride raise over $60,000 since 2017.

With the win, NCFC (14W-9L-8D) now has 50 points with three matches remaining in the regular-season and holds seventh place in the Eastern Conference, where the top 10 sides qualify for the postseason. 

Saturday’s match had massive ramifications for NCFC and Ottawa, which entered the game in eighth place, just two points behind NCFC. 

Despite trailing 1-0 at halftime, head coach Dave Sarachan’s side rallied for three goals in the game’s final 45 minutes to earn a vital victory, as center back Sam Brotherton, forward Robbie Kristo and midfielder Nazmi Albadawi each found the back of the net. 

“I think our guys were mentally in it for a good amount of minutes, which is important going down the stretch as we wind the season down," Sarachan said. “Very pleased. Big three points for us.”

Active from the beginning, Ottawa started its night off well and took an early lead in the fourth minute as midfielder Thiago’s header off of a corner kick flew into the far left corner. 

NCFC generated its fair share of chances throughout the first half, including midfielder Steven Miller’s diving header in the eighth minute, which was turned away by Ottawa goalkeeper Callum Irving. 

With his team down a goal, NCFC goalkeeper Alex Tambakis kept the home side in the game with a brilliant save in the 32nd minute, as he turned away Ottawa’s Hadji Barry with a diving save. 

Out of the halftime break, NCFC immediately put the visitors under pressure and evened the match with an emphatic header by Brotherton in the 53rd minute off of a corner kick by midfielder Graham Smith. 

Not satisfied only to be on level terms, NCFC continued to push and it was Kristo, a second-half substitute, who supplied the go-ahead goal with help from a fellow sub. Having been played in by midfielder Manny Perez, Kristo put a shot on target that evaded Ottawa’s Irving after taking a deflection, giving NCFC a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute. 

Given a chance to put the match away, NCFC did just that in the 90th minute through midfielder Nazmi Albadawi’s third goal of the season. After receiving a lofted pass from Perez, Albadawi calmly scored from within six yards, making it a 3-1 game. 

In possession of a two-goal lead, NCFC secured its ninth home victory of the season. 

Fact to Know 

NCFC’s 3-1 victory over Ottawa Fury FC marked the first time this season that NCFC trailed at halftime and went on to win.

With four regular-season matches remaining, NCFC (13W-9L-8D, 47 points) holds seventh place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference. 

Throughout the first half, chances were scarce for the two sides, as both defenses kept their shape. However, midfielder Manny Perez managed to create a handful of threatening chances for NCFC in the game’s opening minutes out on the right flank. 

Ultimately, it was Charleston’s Tah Anunga who opened the scoring for the hosts right before the break with a goal in the 44th minute. 

Trailing 1-0 after halftime, head coach Dave Sarachan’s squad found itself in the final third quite often as the second half began, consistently putting Charleston’s defense under pressure. NCFC’s persistence was rewarded in the 49th minute, as right back DJ Taylor connected with Albadawi for an equalizing goal. 

After chasing down a ball from Perez, Taylor played in a low cross from the endline, which Albadawi calmly slotted into the back of the net with a one-timed effort. The goal was Albadawi’s second since rejoining NCFC in June, and the assist was Taylor’s fourth of the season. 

After pulling even, NCFC continued to pressure the hosts, as forward Donovan Ewolo put a headed shot on frame in the 54th minute. 

As the game’s final minutes approached, NCFC continued to chase a second goal. In the 82nd minute, second-half substitute Robbie Kristo did well to turn and fire a left-footed shot, but he saw his effort saved by Charleston’s Joe Kuzminsky.

Defensively, Greek goalkeeper Alex Tambakis will look to stay in good form following a five-save performance at Swope Park. The second-year NCFC man has impressed in 2019, earning USL Championship Fans’ Choice Midseason Goalkeeper of the Year honors. On the year, Tambakis has made 75 saves and recorded six clean sheets. 

For Charleston, the man up top to pay attention to is 25-year-old forward Zeiko Lewis. The Bermuda international has scored a team-high six goals and his four assists are the second-most on the Battery as well. 

Coached by longtime leader Michael Anhaeuser, Charleston is looking for its second straight home win, having defeated the Indy Eleven 1-0 on Sept. 8.

Last Time Out 

Despite creating multiple scoring chances and five saves by goalkeeper Alex Tambakis, NCFC fell 1-0 to Swope Park Rangers on Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park. 

In the 58th minute, Swope Park grabbed the game’s only goal as forward Wilson Harris scored from close range. Despite falling behind, NCFC pushed forward, aided by the insertion of substitutes Manny Perez and Justin Rennicks. In the 72nd minute, right back DJ Taylor did well to play a dangerous ball into the box, which midfielder Austin da Luz nearly got on the end of. In the end, NCFC couldn’t find an equalizer and Swope Park protected its narrow lead. 

Players to Watch 

North Carolina FC – #21 Nazmi Albadawi
The NCFC fan favorite is set to return to action this weekend after starring with the Palestine National Team earlier this month, as he provided an assist in its 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in FIFA World Cup qualifying. Albadawi, who has the second-most assists in club history (21), is capable of seeing scoring opportunities when others don’t. The Raleigh native is a threat to score himself, however, evidenced by his 21 career goals for NCFC. 

Charleston Battery– #25 Kotaro Higashi 
The Japanese midfielder is an established fixture in head coach Michael Anhaeuser’s setup and has continued to impress in his third season with the team. In 21 appearances this season, Higashi has dished out a team-high four assists, bringing his three-year tally up to 13. If NCFC can make things difficult for Higashi, it could be a good sign for Tambakis and his defense.

CARY, N.C.. (Sept. 20, 2019) – North Carolina FC is set to travel to the Palmetto State to face longtime rival Charleston Battery on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET at MUSC Health Stadium.

With a victory, sixth-place NCFC (13W-8L-8D, 47 points) can clinch a spot in the 2019 USL Championship Playoffs. A win or draw would also give head coach Dave Sarachan’s team the Southern Derby title for the fifth time in club history. On the season, NCFC is 1W-0L-2D against Southern Derby rivals Charleston and Charlotte Independence. 

It’s been nearly six months since NCFC and Charleston last met, when NCFC earned a 1-1 draw on March 30 at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park behind a stoppage-time stunner by midfielder Tommy McCabe, who was playing for NCFC on loan from FC Cincinnati at the time.
