North Carolina Football Club Announces Game Platforms for April and May

Cary, NC (March 22, 2018) – The North Carolina Football Club has announced April and May game platforms for North Carolina FC and NC Courage home matches. As announced earlier this month, the club is enhancing the game day experience this season for fans of all ages.

The month of April will focus on education, starting with the previously announced College Night on Saturday, April 7, with a career fair for college students as well as discounted tickets and packages for students with a valid student ID. On Wednesday, April 18, as the NC Courage hosts the Seattle Reign, fans will be able to take advantage of a $1 Sahlen’s premium hot dog concession special. On Saturday, April 21, the Courage will welcome the Utah Royals and the club will honor local high school champions from different sports. The month of April will conclude with Educator Appreciation Night on Saturday, April 28 as NCFC hosts Penn FC. For the occasion, educators will enjoy discounted tickets with a valid ID and there will be a book drive to benefit Read and Feed, a Cary-based non-profit. Additionally, 2017 Principals of the Year and 2018 Teacher of the Year nominees will be recognized at halftime.

On Saturday, May 12, WakeMed Soccer Park will host the first ever Triangle Craft Beer Fest starting at noon and featuring only beers from local Triangle breweries. A ticket to the NC Courage match vs. the Washington Spirit will be included with the purchase of a ticket to the Beer Fest. Fans are encouraged to get to the park early to enjoy some of the best craft beer in the area and then stay for the game which kicks off at 7 p.m. The month of May will be capped off with Military Appreciation Night on Friday, May 25 as NCFC hosts Atlanta United 2. Members of all branches of the military will be recognized and will enjoy discounted ticket offers.

Sarachan Calls 22 Players to North Carolina For USA-Paraguay on March 27 in Cary

CHICAGO (March 18, 2017) – U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Dave Sarachan will once again put the next generation of the MNT on display, calling 22 players to North Carolina in advance of the upcoming friendly against Paraguay on March 27 in Cary.

With an average of 23 years, 84 days, 17 players are age 24 or under, meaning prospects and potential will be joined with some veteran flavor. The match will be broadcast live from Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1 and UniMas. “This match once again represents an opportunity for some new faces. North Carolina FC Makes USL Debut, Falls to Tampa Bay

CARY, N.C. (March 17, 2018) – Despite constantly threatening the Tampa Bay goal, North Carolina FC ended up on the wrong side of a 3-1 result to the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday in its USL debut match at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Down a goal at halftime after hitting the post three times in the opening 45 minutes, NCFC nearly equalized on numerous occasions in the second half but never could find the back of the net.

The best opportunity came in the 62nd minute, when NCFC defender Steven Miller had a one-on-one with Tampa Bay goalkeeper Cody Mizell after being played in by midfielder Kyle Bekker. However, Miller, who scored NCFC’s first goal of the season in the first half, pushed his shot wide left.

Minutes later, NCFC debutant Daniel Rios and defender D.J. Taylor each had shots saved by Mizell, who was very busy between the pipes for the visitors.

The Rowdies sealed the win with a 90th minute goal by Jack Blake.

Unlucky to be trailing 1-0 after hitting the post twice within the opening 12 minutes, NCFC tied the match in the 38th minute when Miller, the team’s leading returning scorer, found the back of the net with a low-to-the-ground effort from the right side of the box.

The tied score was short-lived, however, with Tampa Bay responding in the 42nd minute on a penalty kick by Georgi Hristov.

Undeterred, NCFC nearly equalized in the 44th minute. Posted out on the left flank, da Luz curled in a cross across the box to Taylor, whose header hit the right post.

Hitting the post was the story of the first half for NCFC. In the fourth minute, a free kick taken by Bekker found da Luz, whose headed effort ricocheted off the lower portion of the left post.

Not long after, Bekker nearly opened up his NCFC scoring account in the 12th minute. On the edge of the box with room to operate, Bekker let loose on a shot that beat Mizell but not the right post.

Eleven minutes later, Tampa Bay, against the run of play, opened the scoring with a left-footed effort from Leo Fernandes.

Moving forward, NCFC hits the road for the next two weeks, playing at Louisville City FC, the defending USL Cup champions, on Saturday, March 24, and at the Richmond Kickers on March 31.

The team returns to Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, April 7, when it hosts Indy Eleven at 7 p.m.

Game Changer:
Miller’s breakaway 17 minutes into the second half looked to be NCFC’s best chance to pull even. Bekker, who was the nucleus of NCFC’s offense in the attacking third, delivered a pinpoint through ball to Miller, but the Tampa Bay defense forced his shot just wide with Mizell closing in on him.

Key Stat:
Saturday’s match proved how slim the margin between victory and defeat can be. NCFC hit the post three times, any number of which could have changed the course of the game had they gone in.

Notes:

– Saturday’s match served as the NCFC debut for the following eight players: Alex Tambakis, Peabo Doue, Marios Lomis, Kyle Bekker, Daniel Rios, Graham Smith, Bernhard Luxbacher and Michael Harrington. The match was also Smith’s first ever professional game.

– Steven Miller, North Carolina FC’s leading returning scorer notched the first goal of the season for NCFC. His effort was assisted by Lomis.

– The loss was NCFC’s first against Tampa Bay since October 24, 2015 and the first in a home opener for the club since 2011. Entering Saturday, NCFC had won its two most recent matches against the Rowdies.

CARY, N.C. (March 16, 2018) – North Carolina FC will start its USL journey on Saturday, March 17 at 3:30 p.m. at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park, as it hosts a familiar foe in the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The match is highlighted by several engaging fan initiatives for the St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

North Carolina FC and Tampa Bay have enjoyed a long-standing series rivalry that dates back to 2010. NCFC has posted the better record in the series history with a 10W-6L-9D ledger against the Rowdies. The club has won two of the last three matches against Tampa Bay, with 3-1 and 4-1 victories in 2016.

The Rowdies roster is highlighted by former NCFC fan favorite Akira Fitzgerald and former England International Joe Cole. Fitzgerald starred as a goalkeeper with NCFC for six seasons from 2011-2016, appearing in 87 matches across all competitions. Cole joined Tampa in 2016 after a highly successful career in the English Premier League.

The new-look North Carolina FC team features eight returners from the 2017 season plus a host of new talent. The club’s busy offseason saw players join the team from all over the world, including new players from Austria, the Netherlands, Greece, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Canada, Gambia and Mexico.

In addition to the melting pot of different cultures on the team, North Carolina FC’s roster is loaded with exciting prospects and experienced professionals. Fan favorites and reliable options Connor Tobin, Austin da Luz and Steven Miller are all back with the club. Expect them to feature alongside new signings that include Canadian international Kyle Bekker, MLS veteran and North Carolina homegrown Michael Harrington and former NCFC player Futty Danso. Keep your eye on up-and-coming players like NCFC Youth Academy product Dre Fortune and Chivas Guadalajara youth product Daniel Rios. The young but talented duo will develop quickly.

Players To Watch:
No. 14 Daniel Rios
The Chivas Guadalajara youth product is set to be a dangerous attacking option for the club this season. After netting a goal in preseason play, look for the on-loan striker to make an immediate impact on the field.

No. 50 Akira Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald ranks ninth in North Carolina FC club history with 87 all-time appearances and eighth with 7,380 minutes played. However, the former fan favorite will don the Tampa Bay away kit on his return to Cary as he looks to stop a dangerous NCFC attack.

Last Time Out:
North Carolina FC closed out its preseason with three-straight clean sheet victories. The club downed in-state rival Charlotte Independence 1-0 before toppling NC State 2-0 and the Charleston Battery 1-0 to close out the preseason slate. Steven Miller led the club with two preseason goals, while Peabo Doue and Daniel Rios also found the back of the net in the preseason.

Aaron Guillen Inks Deal With North Carolina FC

CARY, N.C. (March 15, 2018) – North Carolina FC took another step to solidify its roster prior to the start of the USL campaign by signing Mexican-American defender and FC Dallas youth product Aaron Guillen. The move is pending league and federation approval.

“He’s another player that came into us late in the preseason process, but certainly fills a need at center back on the left side being naturally left footed,” said North Carolina FC Head Coach Colin Clarke. “He’s a young kid that picks up slack, and did well grinding at FC Dallas as one of their homegrown players. I think he is someone who can be here for years to come and be a very good player for us.”

Guillen joins the club following two seasons with FC Dallas. The 24-year-old center back made eight appearances and played 594 minutes in MLS league play during the last two seasons. During his time in Dallas, Guillen was sent to the Tulsa Roughnecks on a short-term loan deal in 2017 where he made three appearances and played 114 minutes in the United Soccer League.

The young center back is a proven winner, and has captured numerous titles throughout his career with various teams. Dating back to his FC Dallas Youth Academy days, Guillen started 33 games for FC Dallas U-18 en route to winning the 2011-12 US Soccer Development Academy national championship.

He also won the Premier Development League championship in 2013 with the Austin Aztex. Additionally, during his time with Florida Gulf Coast from 2012-2015, Guillen was a part of two Atlantic Sun Conference tournament winning teams.

North Carolina FC Adds Former College Stars Graham Smith, Cameron Steele

CARY, N.C (March 15, 2018) – North Carolina FC continues to fill its roster with talented players ahead of the USL season with the addition of former college stars Cameron Steele and Graham Smith. The signings are pending league and federation approval.

Both players joined the squad after spending the preseason on trial with the team and coming through the club’s invite-only combine.

Smith will make his professional debut for NCFC following his college career at the University of South Florida. The central midfielder was a star with the Bulls from 2014 to 2016 where he dominated the defensive midfield and made 60 appearances with the team.

“Graham is someone who came to our invitation combine and did very well,” said North Carolina FC Head Coach Colin Clarke. “He was then invited into our preseason camp and had a very good preseason. He’s an exciting young talent and I think he’s someone that is going to see time on the field. He works very hard and has a great attitude. He’s learning a lot right now and wants to get better. His work rate is exceptional and he’s going to help us a lot this year.”

“I’m very excited to be here and play for North Carolina FC this season,” said Smith. “I’m grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait for the season to get started. As a center midfielder, I think I bring a lot of hard work and good technical skill to the table. I’m willing to help out the team in whatever way I can.”

Steele joins NCFC after wrapping up his college career at Penn State. The central midfielder, who hails from Clayton, N.C., and played for TFCA (now NCFC Youth), is the latest product to come through the club’s youth-to-pro pipeline after playing with NCFC U-23 throughout his college career. Steele spent three seasons with NCFC U-23 and has been on trial with the club for the last few weeks. While at Penn State, Steele saw action in 23 matches and logged over 1,000 minutes on the pitch for the Nittany Lions.

“Cameron has been around us for quite a few years as a youth player and with our U-23 team – where he’s done very well with them,” added Clarke. “We’ve helped develop him as a young player and we’re looking forward to seeing him develop as a professional. He’s another player with a great attitude, work ethic and bright future.”

“It means so much to me to be part of my hometown club,” said Steele. “I grew up in this area and I love the coaches here. They’ve been so good to me and given me this opportunity. I’m very excited to see what we can do this year and hopefully we can win the league.”

“We’re happy to sign him,” said North Carolina FC Head Coach Colin Clarke. “He’s been with us before and knows what’s expected. He’s someone that is going to bring size and presence to the backline. He’s a good defender. We’re happy to have him back and he’s going to be a big help to us defensively.”

“I’m happy to sign again with a club that has given me a lot,” said Danso. "I’ve been connected since my PDL days here. I’ve seen what the club has accomplished in the Triangle area and I’m excited to see it continue to grow. Going into the season, the only reason you play is to win. That’s the only thing we want accomplish this year – winning the league. That’s the goal for the team and that’s what I’m here to do.”

Danso returns to the area after playing for North Carolina FC in 2015. During his previous season at the club, the center back played 1,450 minutes in 19 appearances and scored one goal.

Danso has journeyed through the ranks of professional soccer in North America during his career. Most notably, Danso logged six years with the Portland Timbers, which included a move from the USSF Division 2 to MLS. He’s also made additional stops with the Montreal Impact and Rayo OKC.

Following the 2016 season, Danso took his talents to Malaysia where he spent the 2017 season with Kelantan FA in the Malaysia Super League. Danso played 1,980 minutes in 22 matches.

Prior to starting his professional career, the Gambian international played college soccer at North Carolina Wesleyan and Southern Polytechnic State University. He also featured for NCFC U-23 in the Premier Development League.

Whats New at North Carolina Football Club for 2018

Cary, NC (March 13, 2018) – With North Carolina FC and the NC Courage set to begin their 2018 campaigns, the North Carolina Football Club has been hard at work in the offseason to ensure fans have the best possible experience at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. From more convenient kickoff times to enhanced concessions and in-stadium fan events, the club’s offerings will be sure to satisfy all soccer fans who attend games.

We asked, you answered
At the end of 2017, North Carolina Football Club members were asked to vote on two items pertaining to fan experience. Season ticket, Flex and NCFC Youth members were asked to vote on preferred start times for evening games as well as the name of the new NC Courage mascot. The NC Courage mascot will be unveiled in the coming days, while an NCFC mascot is in the works and will debut later in the season. Additionally, an overwhelming majority of the club’s members voted for 7:00 p.m. kickoff times resulting in a standard evening start time of 7:00 p.m.

New in-stadium initiatives
This season, the club will be introducing several initiatives that will enhance the fan experience at games. New concession menu items, special corporate VIP ticket packages, in-stadium vendors and a game-day host are new elements that will boost the club’s fan experience at each home game. Below are details on these new offerings for 2018.

Concessions: North Carolina Football Club’s longtime partner Backyard Bistro will be introducing tacos, philly cheese steaks and brick oven pizza. Additionally, vendors will be roaming the stands with beer, soft drinks and snacks so that fans will not have to leave their seats during the match. This season, fans will also be able to purchase 16oz cans of Lonerider’s NCFC Captain’s Lager at concession stands throughout the stadium.
Merchandise: New for this season, fans will be able to purchase NCFC or NC Courage apparel outside the stadium, prior to gates opening. A merchandise tent will be placed outside the gates near the will-call and express sales tables starting at 4:00 p.m. for night games and at 12:30 p.m. for afternoon games. The tent will remain open until all fans are inside the stadium (approximately 20 minutes into the first half).
Far Post Pavilion: This year, the club is offering an enhanced corporate season ticket that includes access to a special VIP tent, located in the southwest corner of the stadium, to network or to relax and play exclusive tailgate-style games such as corn hole. NCFC will purchase two free drinks in the tent to all Corporate Ticket Members at every game. In addition, there will be a rotating course of food options available for purchase.
In-Stadium Host: Starting this year, the club’s own Kelly Glendenning will serve as in-stadium host. She will be greeting fans entering the stadium from the video board and conduct contests and brief interviews during breaks in the game to further enhance the fan experience

While some initiatives to raise fund and awareness for causes near and dear to the organization will be announced at a later date, the club is offering fans the opportunity to help the cause by rounding up to benefit Kicks 4 Kids (which provides tickets to underprivileged children who wouldn’t be able to attend games). Fans will have an option to “round up” their purchase by making a donation when purchasing individual tickets online or in person at the box office.

Stadium policies
The club is also announcing some new stadium policies for 2018.

Free Parking: Just like last season, parking will be free for regular season games at WakeMed Soccer Park in all areas except lots B and C.
Soccer balls may be brought in for autograph purposes but must be deflated.
Backpacks with multiple pockets are not allowed. Only single pocket backpacks will be permitted in stadium.
No outside food or drink will be allowed.
Empty water bottles no larger than 32oz are allowed to be brought in and filled at the multiple water fountains found inside the stadium.
Cameras with detachable lenses will not be allowed in the stadium.

North Carolina Football Club Announces College Night for April 7

CARY, N.C. (March 9, 2018) – North Carolina Football Club continues to offer fans exciting and meaningful promotions for its 2018 home games, as the club has announced College Night on Saturday, April 7. The game will offer college students discounted ticket prices for the matchup between North Carolina FC and the Indy Eleven at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park at 7 p.m.

The exclusive ticket deals are highlighted by a four-game flex pack for college students. The deal includes a ticket to the April 7 game, three other flex tickets and an exclusive NCFC tonal tee in local college colors for only $29.

Additionally, individual North Stand tickets for the game will be on sale to college students for just $6. College students must provide a valid student ID to purchase student-priced tickets.

The NCFC tonal t-shirt has been redesigned to capture the spirit and passion of colleges across the state of North Carolina. The club will offer purple, red, light blue and royal blue NCFC tonal t-shirts with the purchase of a four-game college flex pack.

College night joins a growing list of promotions that North Carolina Football Club has already announced this season. The club will host a St. Patrick’s Day themed game for the North Carolina FC home opener against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, March 17 at 3:30 p.m.

The NC Courage will kick off its season with an NWSL Championship rematch against the Portland Thorns on Saturday, March 24 at 3:30 p.m. and host a Kicks 4 Kids game, which provides tickets to underprivileged youth and families. The following weekend, the Courage will continue its home stand on Saturday, March 31st against Sky Blue FC. Fans can participate in a pre-game egg hunt and MIX 101.5 will host a used soccer equipment drive and offer a 50% off North Stand vouchers for participation in the equipment drive.
