North Carolina FC Open Tryout Information Announced

CARY, N.C. (Jan 15, 2017) – North Carolina FC will hold open tryouts on Feb. 1-2 at WakeMed Soccer Park, as the club continues to search for talent ahead of the 2018 season. Tryouts are open for any player age 18 and older. Players will be evaluated by NCFC Head Coach Colin Clarke and his staff.

The registration fee for the tryout is $150. Each tryout session will take place on Field 6 at WakeMed Soccer Park. The evaluation will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1 and from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2.

North Carolina FC to Open 2018 USL Home Slate Against Familiar Opponent

CARY, N.C. (Jan. 12, 2018) – North Carolina FC will usher in a new era at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, March 17 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the club’s 2018 USL debut. Further details on the match including kickoff time and ticket info will be released soon.

“It’s a change for us, going to the USL, and it’s one that we’re all looking forward to,” said North Carolina FC Head Coach Colin Clarke. “We’re excited for our first game and it’s nice to have the first game at home and with a team we have history against. We’ve played a lot of good games against Tampa in the past. They’re a very good team and well run. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

In addition to finding out the club’s home-opener opponent, the USL released conference alignment for the 2018 season today. As expected, North Carolina FC will be in the Eastern Conference.

North Carolina FC has enjoyed a strong record in league home openers, posting a 5W-1L-5D record in home openers since the team’s first season in 2007. NCFC will look to get started on the front foot in 2018, as it looks to make Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park a home fortress.

North Carolina FC and Tampa Bay have enjoyed a long-standing series rivalry that dates back to 2010. NCFC has enjoyed the better record in the series history, posting a 10W-6L-9D ledger against the Rowdies. North Carolina has won two of the last three matches against Tampa Bay, with 3-1 and 4-1 victories in 2016.

The Rowdies roster is highlighted by former NCFC fan favorite Akira Fitzgerald and former England International Joe Cole. Fitzgerald starred with NCFC for six seasons from 2011-2016, appearing in 87 matches across all competitions. Cole joined Tampa in 2016 after a highly successful career in the English Premier League.

North Carolina FC’s growing roster currently includes goalkeepers Austin Guerrero and George Marks, defenders Peabo Doue, Steven Miller and D.J. Taylor and midfielders Austin da Luz, Marcel Kandziora and Ebe Kudolo.

The league will feature 33 teams across two conferences for the upcoming season, with an even greater group of regional rivalries featuring across both conferences in the new year as the league’s regular season expands to 34 games.

The conferences will be split geographically, with 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 17 teams in the Western Conference. One team, Saint Louis FC, has moved to the Western Conference for the new season, where it will join expansion clubs Las Vegas Lights FC and Fresno FC in the battle for a place in the USL Cup Playoffs this season.

The Eastern Conference will welcome four new teams this season, with ATL UTD 2, Indy Eleven, Nashville SC and North Carolina FC joining the conference. The addition of Indy and Nashville adds to a strong pocket of clubs in the Midwest as they join FC Cincinnati and Louisville City FC, while NCFC and ATL UTD 2 complement the league’s existing clubs on the East Coast, with the Charleston Battery, Charlotte Independence and Richmond Kickers eagerly awaiting the chance to square off with their new rivals.

MLS Veteran, Defensive Powerhouse Michael Harrington Signs With North Carolina FC

CARY, N.C. (Jan. 10, 2018) – North Carolina FC welcomes home North Carolina native Michael Harrington following an extensive 11-year MLS career. The defender will join North Carolina FC for the 2018 USL season pending league and federation approval.
 
“I’m excited to add someone with his caliber and experience to the squad,” said North Carolina FC Head Coach Colin Clarke. “He’s played in MLS and had a good career there for many years and we’re excited to bring him back home.”
 
“It’s important to bring players in with that experience. He’s a good person with high character. He’ll help us on the field and his leadership will help some of our young prospects and teach them to be better professionals.”
 
While the upcoming season marks Harrington’s first with the club, the talented left back is no stranger to the area and has been intertwined with the rich soccer tradition in the state of North Carolina throughout his storied career. The veteran defender will bring a wealth of experience to NCFC with over 20,000 minutes of MLS action under his belt. 
 
Harrington was born in Greenville, N.C., and played youth soccer for CASL (now NCFC Youth) before joining the United States U-17 residency program and IMG Soccer Academy in 2001. Harrington was a prominent member of the U.S. Youth National Team, earning his first national team call up at the U-14 level. Harrington represented the United States at several high-profile international tournaments, including the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Championships and the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
 
“I'm extremely excited to be coming back home to continue my playing career as the Triangle area is at the root of my youth career and is where I proudly represented the Tar Heels for four years as well,” said Harrington. “I’m thankful to Colin and his staff for the opportunity and I intend on doing everything I can day in and day out to make our team as successful as possible on and off the pitch.”
 
Harrington played college soccer for UNC from 2003-2006 where he was a two-time All-ACC selection and led the Tar Heels to the NCAA Tournament all four years – including a run to the quarterfinals in 2005. During his college career, the defender scored four goals and added 14 assists. He spent three seasons with Raleigh CASL Elite (now North Carolina FC U23) in the Premier Development League from 2004-2006.
 
The defender started his professional career as a highly-touted prospect and was drafted third overall in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting KC). He spent six seasons in Kansas City. His time with the club was highlighted by winning the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and making the MLS Cup Playoffs on four occasions.
 
Harrington was traded to the Portland Timbers in 2013, where he helped lead the Timbers to the Western Conference Finals. Following a two-year stint in Portland, he played for the Colorado Rapids in 2015 before spending the last two seasons with the Chicago Fire. In total, Harrington made 258 MLS appearances and played 20,492 minutes between regular season and postseason play. He totaled five goals and 19 assists during his MLS career.
 
Harrington has faced North Carolina FC once in his career, appearing as a substitute in Kansas City’s 4-2 (AET) U.S. Open Cup victory over NCFC in 2008.

North Carolina native Ike Opara Called In to USMNT January Camp

With a focus on the future, acting U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Dave Sarachan has called 30 players for the USA’s annual January Camp. Players will report Jan. 10 to the National Training Center in Carson, California.

North Carolina native, Ike Opara, was included among the 30-player roster, marking his first senior national team call up. The defender played youth soccer with TFCA (now NCFC Youth) and featured for the club’s U-23 team from 2008-2009 while attending Wake Forest University.

The Durham, N.C., native wrapped up an impressive season with Sporting Kansas City where he earned MLS Best XI and 2017 MLS Defender of the Year honors. Opara has previously represented his country at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the  2012 U-23 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

“I’m very happy for Ike getting his first call in with the senior national team,” said NCFC Assistant Coach and NCFC U-23 Head Coach Dewan Bader. “It’s a great honor to represent the U.S. and be recognized as the MLS Defender of the Year, even more so after dealing with some adversity and injuries along the way.”

Some of the USA’s most promising young prospects are expected to be on display in the friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Jan. 28 at the StubHub Center in Carson. Kickoff is set for 9:30 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast live on FS1 and UniMas. North Carolina FC Continues to Build Roster with Additions of Kudolo, Doue

CARY, N.C. (Jan. 4, 2018) – North Carolina FC continues to build its roster ahead of the 2018 USL season with the additions of midfielder Ebe Kudolo and defender Peabo Doue, pending league and federation approval.
 
Kudolo and Doue join a developing roster that currently includes goalkeepers Austin Guerrero and George Marks, defenders Steven Miller and D.J. Taylor and midfielders Austin da Luz and Marcel Kandziora.
 
Kudolo will join NCFC pending the receipt of his P1 visa. He comes to the club after a successful college career with High Point University. The midfielder wrapped up his career with the Panthers as a three-time All-Big South selection. In total, Kudolo made 72 appearances and added six goals and 15 assists. He was signed after a successful showing at the club’s invite-only combine.
 
“I’m happy and blessed to sign my first professional contract with North Carolina FC,” said Kudolo. “I’d like to thank God, my family and friends for always showing me maximum support. It's been a dream to sign with the club. I can’t wait to team up and coordinate with the players and get started on making history together.”
 
The midfielder played for the Carolina Dynamo in 2015 and 2017. Kudolo made 14 appearances and netted one goal and a team-leading three assists during the 2017 Premier Development League (PDL) season. The Ghanaian should be a familiar face for the club, as he played against NCFC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup second round and appeared in three matches against NCFC U-23 during the 2017 PDL season.
 
Doue will join NCFC after one season with Jacksonville Armada FC. The left back saw limited playing time with the Armada but comes to NCFC with a wealth of experience in the USL. Doue spent 2013-2016 in the USL with stints at Phoenix FC, OKC Energy FC and Wilmington Hammerheads FC, totaling 79 appearances in USL play.

NCFC Ties Abound in U.S. Mens YNT Summit

Under the leadership of U.S. Soccer Youth Technical Director Tab Ramos, 153 players have been named to rosters for the U.S. U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19 and U-20 Youth National Teams for the first ever U.S. Soccer Men’s YNT Summit Camp, running from Jan. 2-11 in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

North Carolina Football Club is well represented among the talent pool, which will help shape the national team’s rosters for years to come. Current North Carolina FC and NCFC Youth Academy U-19 goalkeeper George Marks along with Academy graduate Manny Perez have been named to the U.S. U-20 National Team.

Additionally, North Carolina FC Assistant Coach and NCFC U-23 Head Coach Dewan Bader will help coach the U-18 National Team and NCFC Youth Academy Director John Bradford will help coach the U-16 National Team.

With the 2018-2019 player cycle officially kicking off at the turn of the new year, Ramos and the coaching staff will look to continue fostering a program-wide effort to develop world class players, coaches at the summit, which represents a first its kind youth training camp that will focus on integration between players, coaches and staff from the five oldest Youth National Teams, while laying the first foundational elements for qualifying the U.S. for the 2019 FIFA U-20 and U-17 World Cups.

“I am looking forward to building on the success our Youth National Teams had over the last two cycles (2014-2015 and 2016-2017),” Ramos said in a press release via U.S. Soccer. “This first ever Men’s YNT Summit Camp provides all of our teams the opportunity to team build and to continue the development of our style of play in one location together.”

North Carolina FC Strengthens Roster With Re-Signing of Marcel Kandziora, Steven Miller

CARY, N.C. (Jan. 2, 2018) – North Carolina FC continues to add quality to its 2018 roster, as it brings back two key starters from 2017 with the additions of Marcel Kandziora and Steven Miller for the 2018 USL season, pending league and federation approval.
 
Both players made big contributions for the club in 2017, helping the team reach the postseason for the first time since 2012.
 
After overcoming an injury that kept him sidelined during the beginning of the season, Kandziora provided an edge to NCFC’s defensive midfield. He logged 972 minutes in 15 matches across all competitions in 2017. He also scored one goal, netting a long-range strike against Miami FC on Aug. 5.
 
“I’m very grateful and happy to join the NCFC family again,” said Kandziora. “I am confident that we will have a great team for the USL. I look forward to playing another season with my teammates and working with the staff to reach our goals.”
 
Miller was a versatile and consistent piece in the club’s lineup throughout the 2017 season. After playing much of the season at right back, Miller moved forward and played on the right wing during the final stretch of the season. Overall, Miller logged 2,436 minutes in 27 matches, while adding five goals and three assists in 2017, including a stunning strike from distance against the Houston Dynamo in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 14.
 
This year will mark Miller’s third full season with the club. In total, the fan favorite returns as one of the most tenured players in the squad. He’s logged 47 appearances and played 4,098 minutes across all competitions.

North Carolina FC Welcomes Former Liga MX Goalkeeper Austin Guerrero to 2018 Roster

CARY, N.C. (Dec. 15, 2017) – North Carolina FC has bolstered its goalkeeping position with the signing of former Liga MX goalkeeper Austin Guerrero. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Austin is a goalkeeper we’ve known for quite some time,” said NCFC Goalkeeper Coach Nic Platter. “He trained with the club about five years ago, but the timing wasn’t right.  Since then, he’s spent his time playing in Mexico and Panama, and has improved his game as a professional.  Austin will be an exciting goalkeeper to watch, as he is a solid shot stopper and his distribution suits our style of play.  We look forward to having Austin for the 2018 season.”

Following a storied youth and college career in the United States, Guerrero took his talents to Central America where he developed his skills with multiple teams in Mexico and Panama.

“I’m looking forward to making North Carolina my home,” said Guerrero. “There is an obvious passion for soccer in the region, and the fan’s energy and appreciation are what inspire me to play the game.”

The goalkeeper spent last season with Alianza FC of Liga Panameña de Fútbol – the top tier of soccer in Panama. While playing for Alianza FC, Guerrero logged 1170 minutes in 13 appearances for the side.

Prior to his time in the Panamanian league, Guerrero played with three clubs in Mexico including Liga MX sides Puebla and Tigres UANL and Ascenso MX side Altamira FC.

Guerrero made the move to Mexico in 2012 and signed with Tigres after a highly successful college career with the University of Portland. After splitting time with Tigres II and the first team, Guerrero was loaned to Altamira FC (now Cafetaleros de Tapachula), where he played over 2,000 minutes in 25 matches in Ascenso MX – the second division of Mexican soccer. The goalkeeper was also loaned to fellow Liga MX side Puebla in 2016, but saw limited action before making the move to Alianza FC in Panama for the 2017 season.

Guerrero spent his college career playing for the Portland Pilots from 2007 to 2010. He concluded his college career as one of the most decorated goalkeepers in Portland’s history. He was a three-time All-WCC First Team selection and became Pilot’s all-time leader in saves with 346. Guerrero made one appearance for the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team in 2008, earning a shutout in a 0-0 (4-2 PK) win against Honduras.

George Marks, D.J. Taylor Return to NCFC for 2018 Season

Taylor, pending league and federation approval. Both players return for a second season with Marks signing an Academy Contract for the second consecutive year. Both signings help reinforce a development pipeline between North Carolina FC and NCFC Youth Academy. The players are part of the first group of signings since NCFC joined the United Soccer League (USL) in November, paired with the return of Austin da Luz announced earlier today. The move to USL puts the club in one of the most prominent Division II professional soccer leagues in the world, which enjoys a strong partnership with MLS and will reestablish regional rivalries that have existed since the 1990s.

Marks is a local product who came through NCFC Youth and debuted for the Academy in 2015. He’s the starting goalkeeper for the NCFC U19s and has played in 48 matches with the Academy since 2015.

“I’m really happy to be back for another year with the club,” said Marks. “Last year was a major year for me, as I learned a lot from the older guys and earned some time on the bench towards the end of the year. This year I really look forward to being part of the team and pushing to contribute.”

Marks spent the 2017 season developing in NCFC’s goalkeeping unit. He appeared on the bench in five contests in 2017, but did not play in an official match.

Development academy players are eligible to train and sign Academy contracts with professional soccer teams prior to their enrollment in college and keep their NCAA eligibility. Marks has committed to attend Clemson University in Fall 2018.

Taylor is also set to rejoin North Carolina FC for 2018. The promising right back played in two league matches for the club last year, totaling 133 minutes. He also saw time as a guest player in North Carolina FC’s international exhibition against Swansea City AFC this summer prior to signing with the club.

Taylor is a Raleigh, N.C., native and played in the NCFC Youth Academy system from 2012-15. Taylor also earned time with the United States U-18 National Team in 2015. He appeared in two matches and scored one goal at the Copa Chivas Tournament.

Following his academy career, Taylor signed an amateur contract with NCFC in May of 2015. Taylor did not appear in a match, but trained with the first team before moving to Spain, where he played professionally with FC Torre Levante of the Tercera Division for two seasons.
