June Game Platforms Kick Off an Exciting Summer

Cary, NC (April, 24 2018)– The North Carolina Football Club announced June game platforms for North Carolina FC and NC Courage home matches, with two Pride Nights capping off a full month of exciting games and events.

NCFC will kick off the month with three consecutive home matches. Saturday, June 2 will be Camp Out Night as young fans will get to set up camp for the night after the game. The following weekend on Saturday, June 9, the club welcomes FC Cincinnati and will celebrate the accomplishments of its boys and girls U.S. Soccer Development Academy teams as well as recognize local youth soccer players who have distinguished themselves with their leadership skills. Additionally, Miss North Carolina is slated to perform the national anthem before the match. NCFC’s match against Ottawa Fury FC on Wednesday, June 13, will celebrate Father’s Day. Specially-made “Dad” hats will be available for purchase.

Pride Week, presented by Credit Suisse, will begin on Saturday, June 16, when the Courage host Utah Royals FC. Before the game, a tailgate will be hosted by Equality NC, and pride merchandise will be available for purchase. A week later, Pride Week wraps up with NCFC’s match against Louisville City on Saturday, June 23. Equality NC will once again host a pregame tailgate and more pride merchandise will be available for purchase. For both games, fans can purchase two lower level sideline tickets and two rainbow Courage/NCFC t-shirts and scarfs for $39. Fans can also get 20% off tickets with the promo code: Pride18. More Pride Week events will be announced in the weeks leading up to the games.

North Carolina FC Draws 1-1 At Ottawa Fury FC, Austin da Luz Reaches 10,000 Minute Milestone

OTTAWA, (April 21, 2018)– North Carolina FC concluded its three-game road trip today, drawing 1-1 with Ottawa Fury FC at TD Place Stadium. NCFC successfully went undefeated and earned five points on the road trip, which featured a grueling three matches in eight days.

Today, NCFC co-captain and North Carolina native, Austin da Luz, reached the 10,000-minute milestone for NCFC, becoming just the sixth player in club history to do so. Da Luz is in his seventh season with the club and has made 134 appearances, scored 15 goals and added eight assists across competitive matches for NCFC during his career. As the achievements continue to roll in for da Luz, the veteran is establishing himself as an all-time great with the club.

Both teams took their time settling into the match in the early minutes. However, NCFC enjoyed the better first half and broke open the match in the 35th minute when Daniel Rios scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Marios Lomis. Rios placed his shot into the top corner of the net after a clinical give-and-go with Lomis and Marcel Kandziora opened the Ottawa defense to provide Rios with the shot.

Following the halftime break, Ottawa increased its urgency in search of an equalizer. NCFC nearly held back the Fury’s push, but in the 86th minute, Ottawa scored a late goal.

Christian Portilla whipped a corner kick towards the mouth of goal. On Alex Tambakis’ ensuing save attempt, a tangle of bodies collided with the keeper, which caused the ball to fall into the back of the net.

With just minutes remaining, Ottawa held on for the draw, to give NCFC its third positive result in three matches.

CARY, N.C. (April 20, 2018) – North Carolina FC will conclude its three-game road swing with a visit to Ottawa Fury FC on Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at TD Place Stadium. The club will look to continue its shutout streak and resume its rivalry with Ottawa Fury FC which it had formally faced from 2014-16.

While the match presents NCFC with a strong opportunity to move up the USL standings, it could also serve as a major milestone for one of the club’s all-time great players.

Team co-captain Austin da Luz is set to surpass 10,000 minutes played for North Carolina FC. Combined between league play, playoff games and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches, da Luz has played 9,978 minutes heading into the match against Ottawa Fury FC, leaving him just 22 minutes away from passing the historic mark that only five other players in club history have reached. The historic group includes, Kupono Low, Tiyi Shipalane, Connor Tobin, Matt Watson and Nazmi Albadawi.

As da Luz eyes another incredible milestone, North Carolina FC will look to extend its 255-minute shutout streak.

The team will aim to keep the streak alive at a location that has caused problems for the squad in the past. When playing Ottawa away from home, NCFC is just 0W-3L-1D and has been outscored 10-3 against the Fury at TD Place Stadium.

Ottawa enter the match still searching for their first points of the 2018 campaign. With only three matches under its belt, the club has struggled early on, sitting last in the USL’s Eastern Conference standings with no points and a -9 goal differential. Ottawa is entering the game with a full week to prepare for the contest and will look to take advantage of NCFC’s third game in eight days.

Last Time Out:
North Carolina FC battled Toronto FC II to a 0-0 draw in a midweek contest at BMO Field. Despite the overall score line, the match featured end-to-end play throughout and saw North Carolina push for the late win. However, Marios Lomis had a shot hit the crossbar in the 89th minute and Bernhard Luxbacher’s last minute one-on-one attempt was saved.

Lomis has only played 99 minutes this season, but has made an impact each time he’s stepped on the field. The attacker has scored once and provided an assist. Even when he hasn’t scored, the rookie has been an attacking threat and created chances in each match he’s played. Look for Lomis to continue to breakthrough and cause problems for the Ottawa defense.

No. 11 Sito Seoane
Seoane is a scoring threat in front of goal, and will draw the attention of the NCFC defense. Scoring the lone goal for the Fury this season against the Charlotte Independence, look for Seoane to feature prominently in the Ottawa attack.

North Carolina FCs Late Push Held Back in 0-0 Draw Against Toronto FC II

TORONTO (April 18, 2018)– North Carolina FC battled Toronto FC II to a scoreless draw on Wednesday night at BMO Field to earn its second consecutive shutout of the season.

NCFC pushed a hungry Toronto FC II side to the brink in the closing stages of the match. However, the crossbar deflected a late NCFC shot from goal and Angelo Cavalluzzo, Toronto’s goalkeeper, came up with a point-blank save in the final minute of the match to keep the sides level. The draw brings NCFC to four points on the season, while Toronto has earned its first point of the 2018 season with the result.

The two sides grinded out a scoreless first half. Both teams combined for 11 first-half shots, but a steady effort from the defenses kept the match scoreless.

NCFC’s best chance of the opening half came in the 30th minute when Kyle Bekker pounced on a loose ball at the top of the box. Bekker’s shot seemed bound for the bottom corner, but a last-second deflection from the Toronto defense cleared the threat.

The second half continued with a lively end-to-end game. While rarely called upon, Alex Tambakis did well in goal, making four saves, including one from close range to keep the clean sheet.

NCFC increasingly pressured the Toronto goal as the match wore on. Marios Lomis nearly had the match winner in the 89th minute, but his shot careened off the crossbar and away from goal, marking the ninth time that NCFC has hit the frame this season.

In the final minute of the match, Bernhard Luxbacher found his way past the Toronto defense and in on goal, but a tight angle, combined with a strong save from Cavalluzzo, ended the threat for Toronto.

NCFC has now claimed at least a point from its last two matches and has gone 255 minutes without conceding a goal.

CARY, N.C. (April 17, 2018)– North Carolina FC will continue its road swing with a visit to Toronto FC II on Wednesday, April 18 at BMO Field at 8 p.m. ET. The match will be the first ever meeting between the sides and will be broadcast live on ESPN+, the USL’s new home for digital broadcasts.

North Carolina FC enters the match on a high note after defeating in-state rival Charlotte Independence 2-0. The win marked the team’s first victory of the season and third straight over Charlotte in an official match. The team will look to carry that momentum through a tough road swing that also includes a match against Ottawa Fury FC just four days after facing Toronto.

Conversely, Toronto enters the contest on a three-match losing streak. The side has scored just once in its three losses and is looking to quickly make up points in the table. Toronto has one of the youngest squads in the league with no players over 25 years old and nine under 20 years old. Toronto and NCFC have faced one common opponent this season, as Charlotte defeated Toronto 2-0.

The match will be a homecoming of sorts for Kyle Bekker, who hails from Oakville, Ontario – located just about 30 minutes outside of Toronto. Bekker began his professional career with Toronto FC of MLS in 2013 after being drafted third overall in the MLS Superdraft. The Canadian international made 29 league appearances with Toronto FC from 2013-14 before being traded to FC Dallas.

No. 98 Futty Danso
Danso will likely be the oldest player on the pitch on Wednesday night. The 34-year-old center back is at least 10 years older than all but one player for Toronto FC II. Danso has been a rock on the backline for NCFC this season. He’s played every minute of every game and most recently helped the squad earn a shutout in the team’s win over Charlotte. Danso also found his way into the attack last match, which saw his bicycle kick hit the crossbar and fall to Marios Lomis for the second and final goal for NCFC. Look for Danso’s experience to shine as he takes on a much younger squad from Toronto.

Futty Danso Named to USL Team of the Week

TAMPA, Fla. (April 17, 2018)– North Carolina FC defender Futty Danso has been named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 5 of the 2018 season. Danso led NCFC's backline to its first shutout of the season and helped set up the second goal in NCFC’s 2-0 victory over the Charlotte Independence last week.

M – Soony Saad, Indy Eleven – Saad scored both goals, including a 35-yard strike that landed on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10, in Indy’s 2-1 win against Nashville SC on Saturday afternoon.

F – Masta Kacher, Real Monarchs SLC – Kacher scored twice to lead Monarchs to a fourth consecutive win to start season in their 3-1 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 last Wednesday night.

F – Stefano Bonomo, New York Red Bulls II – Bonomo had a goal and two assists as the Red Bulls II romped past the Tampa Bay Rowdies 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.

F – Felix Chenkam, Seattle Sounders FC 2 – Chenkam scored twice, as S2 rallied for a 3-2 victory against Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday evening.

NCFC U-23 to Host Open Tryouts

CARY, N.C. (April 16, 2018)– North Carolina FC U-23 (NCFC U-23) of the Premier Development League (PDL) will hold open tryouts on Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each night on Field 3 at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Tryouts are open to soccer players aged 18 to 23 years old. Head coach Dewan Bader and his staff will evaluate players in advance of the PDL season which begins in May.

Bader, who also serves as assistant coach for the North Carolina FC USL team, guided the U-23s to three consecutive Region III titles (2011-2013) and two National Championships (2011, 2013) while competing in the USASA U-23 Men’s Cup. Joining him will be longtime U-23 coaches Luis Satorra and Rick King, as well as Zack Schilawski.

Under Bader’s guidance, the U-23s have produced several standouts who went on to have successful professional careers including: current NCFC players Futty Danso and Cameron Steele, as well as, Michael Grella, Enzo Martinez, Ike Opara, Zack Schilawski, Brian Shriver, Billy Schuler, Akira Fitzgerald, Nazmi Albadawi, and Conor Donovan.

Registration is $125 and includes a ticket to the North Carolina FC match against Penn FC on Saturday, April 28 at 7 p.m. at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

The PDL is a part of the United Soccer Leagues, which also operates the Division II USL, the new USL Division III and Super Y League and has served as the proven stepping-stone for aspiring professionals.
