TAMPA, Fla. (July 3, 2018) – For the third week in a row, North Carolina FC has placed a player on the USL Team of the Week, as Austin da Luz received the honor for Week 16 of the USL season.
 
Da Luz nodded home the game-winning goal in NCFC’s 3-1 come-from-behind rivalry win over Richmond this past weekend. He also put the ball on frame for the team’s equalizer, which was officially awarded an own goal.
 
He’s the fifth NCFC player to be named to the USL Team of the Week, joining Futty Danso in Week 5, Kyle Bekker in Week 7, Steven Miller in Week 14 and Daniel Rios in Week 15.

GK – Carl Woszczynski, Phoenix Rising FC:Woszczynski recorded a seven-save shutout, as Phoenix took a 1-0 victory against Orange County SC despite being down to 10 men for 55 minutes.

RICHMOND, Va. (June 30, 2018) – North Carolina FC came from behind to earn a huge 3-1 road victory at City Stadium over the Richmond Kickers on Saturday night. After falling behind early, NCFC completed the comeback with two goals in a three-minute span and added an insurance goal in extra time.
 
The match added another exciting chapter to the regional rivalry between the two cities that has been around since the early 1990s. Tonight’s victory was NCFC’s first official win in the series since 2009.
 
In the blink of an eye, the rivalry resumed on the field. Richmond scored in the fourth minute after a flick from Heviel Cordovés snuck into the back corner of the net. 
 
The early goal forced NCFC to chase the game from the start. The visitors chipped away at the Richmond defense until the floodgates finally opened in the 59th minute.
 
The first goal was officially ruled an own goal. Kyle Bekker served in a cross that Austin da Luz headed towards goal. The ball hit the leg of Richmond defender Alex Lee and rolled into the net. 
 
Minutes later, Bekker and da Luz connected again for the second NCFC goal. Bekker sent another pinpoint cross into the box. Da Luz was in the right place at the right time and buried the eventual game-winning goal with another header. The assist was Bekker’s team-leading seventh of the season and da Luz’s second league goal in 2018.
 
NCFC added an insurance goal to bring the score to 3-1 in extra time when Donovan Ewolo won and converted a penalty kick. The tally was his second USL goal of the year.
 
Notes:
The rivalry between Raleigh-based soccer clubs and the Richmond Kickers dates all the way back to the early 1990s with the Raleigh Flyers. NCFC’s victory was the first official win in the series since a 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup win.
 
The ties between NCFC and Richmond run deep, as Curt Johnson, current North Carolina Football Club President and General Manager, previously served as the Richmond Kickers General Manager, and NCFC Head Coach Colin Clarke began his head-coaching career with Richmond in 1998.

Rivalry nights, a historic doubleheader and more await North Carolina Football Club supporters
 

CARY, N.C. (June 29, 2018)– North Carolina Football Club has announced game platforms for North Carolina FC and NC Courage home matches at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park from August through October, starting off with the club’s rivalry weekend from Aug. 4-5. 
 
On Saturday, Aug. 4, NCFC takes on the Charleston Battery, an opponent Triangle-based soccer clubs have played since the early 1990s. The game is presented by Circle K and part of NCFC’s rivalry pack, which includes tickets to games against Charleston on July 7, Charleston on Aug. 4, and the Charlotte Independence on Aug. 25, for $45. Circle K will be giving away t-shirt jerseys to fans. A day later, the Courage host Portland Thorns FC (presented by Wake Orthopaedics) on Sunday, Aug. 5 in a rematch of the 2017 NWSL Championship game. Fans can purchase a weekend pass with lower sideline seating to both the NCFC and Courage matches on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 for just $30. 
 
Two weekends later, the Courage will hold Breast Cancer Awareness Night when hosting the Orlando Pride on Saturday, Aug. 18 in a match presented by Aetna. Breast cancer survivors will be recognized at halftime and Courage players will wear pink warmup tops. Group ticket rates will apply in all ticket locations when the promo code “Pink18” is used, with $2 from each ticket going to Courage player McCall Zerboni’s foundation, MZ & Emmers, which raises money for breast cancer awareness and prevention. 
 
Sponsored by Gonza, Tacos y Tequila, NCFC will host Supporters Night/Lucha Libre Night on Saturday, Aug. 25 against the Charlotte Independence. The club’s ties to Richmond run deep, as Curt Johnson, current North Carolina Football Club President and General Manager, previously served as the Richmond Kickers General Manager, and NCFC Head Coach Colin Clarke began his head-coaching career with Richmond in 1998. Richmond also features former NCFC players Brian Shriver and Neil Hlavaty.

CARY, N.C. (June 23, 2018) – An impressive performance bookended by goals from in-form striker Daniel Rios against the Eastern Conference’s second-place team earned North Carolina FC a 2-2 draw Saturday night against Louisville City at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

With his team trailing as the end of the match approached, Rios poked home his eighth goal of the season in the 87th minute after an impressive run and pass from fan-favorite Tiyi Shipalane, as NCFC (4W-7L-3D) earned an important point in the standings.

“I thought we responded magnificently (to a second-half deficit),” NCFC head coach Colin Clarke said. “It was probably the first time this year where it’s gone our way in the last few minutes of a game, and what looked like a defeat at one point…we got a point. I thought we thoroughly deserved it.”

Going up against the defending USL Cup Champions, NCFC knew the importance of getting off to a good start. It did just that in the 11th minute when Rios headed home midfielder Kyle Bekker’s cross from the left. Eyeing Bekker’s crisp delivery as soon as it came off the Canadian’s foot, Rios leapt over Louisville City defender Paco Craig and his header zoomed by Louisville City goalkeeper Gregory Ranjitsingh.

In the 39th minute, the visitors pulled even, as Louisville City’s Craig found the back of the net with a header off a corner kick from Oscar Jimenez.

From there, the two teams went into the halftime break with nothing separating them. As the second half began, chances were initially few and far apart for both sides, with much of the action taking place between the two 18-yard boxes.

However, NCFC came inches away from regaining the lead in the 57th minute, as Rios once again threatened with his head. Chasing down a cross from midfielder Austin da Luz, the Chivas Guadalajara loanee saw his header glance off the outside of the left post.

Two minutes later, in the 59th-minute, the visitors took their first lead of the night through Ilija Ilic, who maneuvered around the box before slotting his effort home from just a few yards out on the right.

Showing a great amount of resolve, NCFC continued to fight back and didn’t allow Louisville City to strike again while putting together good stretches of play in dangerous positions at the other end of the field. That determination eventually paid off when Shipalane, who came on as a substitute in the 74th minute, set up Rios for the game-tying goal.
