CARY, N.C. (October 17, 2018) – North Carolina Football Club announced today that NCFC head coach Colin Clarke will not return to the club after seven seasons. 

“We are very grateful to Colin for his work in helping the club grow throughout his seven-year tenure,” said North Carolina FC President and General Manager Curt Johnson. “He is a true team player, and with him the team has enjoyed on-field success with our US Open Cup runs and the 2013 NASL Regular Season Championship. We wish he and his family all the best in their future endeavors.” 

Clarke, the longest tenured coach in club history, began his time with NCFC in 2012 and enjoyed success with runs in the US Open Cup, including victories over the LA Galaxy in three successive years, and defeating NCFC’s biggest rival Charlotte Independence five consecutive times over the last three seasons. 

During his seven seasons at the club, Clarke finished with a 91W-84L-58D record across all competitions and a .515 win percentage. He has coached the team to the NASL semifinals in 2012 and 2017 and won the NASL regular season in 2013. This past season the team finished 13-13-8 narrowly missing the playoffs but capturing the Southern Derby Cup with yet another win over Charlotte in the final game of the season.

“I have enjoyed my time here in North Carolina,” said Clarke. “We have enjoyed some success and went through some trying times. It has been an honor to help the club grow, but such is football and as my time here comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve Malik, Curt Johnson, my coaching staff, the NCFC front office and especially the players and fans who supported the club during my seven years here. North Carolina FC now begins the search for Clarke’s successor who will become only the fourth coach in club history.

The win over the in-state rivals clinched the 2018 Southern Derby Cup for North Carolina FC. Rios’ two goals brought him to 20 on the season, which equaled the club record for most goals in a single season, previously set by Etienne Barbara in 2011.
 
This marks the 12th time a player from North Carolina FC has been named to the USL Team of the Week and the fourth time that Rios has earned the honor.

MATTHEWS, N.C. (Oct. 13, 2018) –North Carolina FC picked up a huge result with a 3-1 victory over the Charlotte Independence on Saturday night at the Sportsplex at Matthews. The win has earned North Carolina FC supporters the Southern Derby Cup and will keep NCFC’s playoff hopes alive going into the final day of the regular season.
 
To qualify for the playoffs, North Carolina FC will await the result of the Bethlehem Steel FC vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies game on Sunday. NCFC will need Bethlehem to lose by four goals to catch up on goal difference and advance on the tiebreaker.
 
The club has also captured the Southern Derby Cup, returning the trophy to the club’s supporters for the first time since 2009 – which was the last year the club was previously involved in the competition. NCFC has now won the trophy four times in the history of the franchise. (2018, 2009, 2008, 2007)
 
Charlotte entered the match riding a seven-game undefeated streak, but has lost to North Carolina FC for the third time this season. North Carolina FC now holds a 5W-1L record in official matches over the Charlotte Independence, while outscoring the in-state rivals 20-5.
 
A lightning-quick start saw both teams score within the opening six minutes. NCFC opened the scoring when Daniel Rios notched his 19th goal of the year. The forward took advantage of a through ball from Victor Igbekoyi, cut to the left to shake the defender and buried his shot at the far post.
 
However, just 30 seconds later, Charlotte’s Jorge Herrera pulled his side level with a bicycle kick. Herrera took advantage of a botched clearance and made no mistake on his perfectly-placed overhead kick.
 
Despite NCFC’s advantage in possession and shots, the teams entered halftime knotted at 1-1. 
 
After the restart, the game continued its end-to-end play, but neither side could find the back of the net. With time winding down, a late rally allowed North Carolina FC to firmly take control of the match, scoring two goals in quick succession.
 
Rios clinched the win in the 87th minute with his 20th goal of the season off an assist from Donovan Ewolo. NCFC also added another crucial goal towards its goal difference in stoppage time, as Steven Miller scored off an assist from Kyle Bekker to bring the game to its final score.

Charlotte Independence – No. 23 Alex Martinez
Martinez has been a staple in the Independence starting XI this season, amassing over 2,500 minutes and earning 29 starts. While the midfielder leads his team in assists (5), he also contributes heavily on the defensive end, winning a team-high 48 tackles. Fans of NCFC may recognize Martinez from his playing days as a member of the Carolina Railhawks, where he suited up for the team twice in his 2014 campaign.

Louisville responded with a run of its own, but a resolute NCFC backline held the home side scoreless – highlighted by a world-class save from Alex Tambakis in the 16th minute.
 
NCFC finally broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when Daniel Rios notched his 18th goal of the year. Rios completed a run through the box as Steven Miller sent in an accurate cross from the right flank. The striker made no mistake on the finish and tapped in the opening goal with a defender on his hip.
 
The score line held until the halftime break, but didn’t last long after the restart. Cameron Lancaster scored with a top-shelf strike from nearly 24 yards out in the 47th minute. The goal marked a USL record 23rd on the season for the striker. 
 
NCFC continued to search for a goal as the half wore on, but Louisville turned away serval attacking chances. Notably, Rios was on a breakaway in the 71st minute, but two Louisville defenders chased down the forward to end the threat. 
 
In the 84th minute, Louisville took control of the match as Lancaster scored again. The forward tapped in a ball at the far post that found its way through the NCFC defense.
 
Despite the team’s best efforts, the equalizing goal wouldn’t come and Louisville took all three points with the win.

NCFC is in 10th place in the USL Eastern Conference with 44 points, but can still climb as high as fifth place, pending other results around the conference. A tightly-bunched middle of the pack has created a difficult situation to predict, but following midweek games around the league, the results will be much clearer heading into the regular season finale. 
 
North Carolina is set to face a Louisville side that is performing well this season and currently sits in second with 60 points and a playoff spot already clinched.
 
Louisville is on a five-match unbeaten streak, while outscoring opposition 16-4 during the run. The teams previously met in Cary, playing out to a 2-2 draw in June. Despite Louisville holding a 2-1 advantage late in the match, an 87th-minute goal from Daniel Rios helped NCFC earn a point.

CARY, N.C. (October 6, 2018) – Despite holding a 12-shot advantage, North Carolina FC found itself on the wrong end of a 2-1 result against New York Red Bulls II Saturday night in its regular-season home finale at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. 

Over 8,820 attended Saturday’s match, the largest single-game regular-season crowd in NCFC history. 

“Immensely disappointed with the outcome,” NCFC head coach Colin Clarke said. “Disappointed. We got into it, gave up a poor goal. Obviously red card right before halftime changes [things]. Second half, did very well. Great chances, get the goal, and then we pushed looking for the next one. Their keeper made some great saves and we missed some chances.”

NCFC was given an early test as Red Bulls II forward Anatole Bertrand-Abang found himself in on goal in the fourth minute. From a tight angle, Bertrand-Abang looked to put his team ahead, but NCFC goalkeeper Alex Tambakis was up to the challenge and turned the shot away. 

NCFC’s first great scoring opportunity of the night came in the 11th minute, as Kyle Bekker targeted Austin da Luz on a corner kick for a second straight week. Da Luz’s header, however, was off frame. 

In the 24th minute, Bertrand-Abang gave the visitors the lead with a header on a corner kick.
 
It was nearly an instant response from NCFC, as da Luz played in a service to target man Donovan Ewolo, who controlled the ball with his chest and then fired up on frame, only to see his effort handled by Red Bulls II goalkeeper Evan Louro. 
 
NCFC went into the halftime break down a goal but received a boost when Red Bulls II’s Bertrand-Abang was shown a red card following an off-the-ball incident after the halftime whistle. 

Energized by its unexpected man-advantage, NCFC came out flying to start the second half. The team’s stretch of offensive pressure was made worthwhile by Bekker’s match-tying goal in the 52nd minute. 

After receiving a cross from Zach Steinberger, Bekker finished from close range as his shot from the right side of the box deflected off the left crossbar into the net. The goal was Bekker’s third in two games. 

In the 63rd minute, a menacing ball sent in by Bekker from the corner flag produced a jumble in the box, and Steven Miller nearly scored from the ground, but Red Bulls II’s Louro reacted quickly and blocked the effort. 
 
Miller remained active in the NCFC attack and played in a great ball to Ewolo, who headed the shot on target in the 75 minute. Unfortunately for the NCFC striker, his pacey header went right to Louro. 
 
Against the run of play, Red Bulls II retook the lead in the 78th minute with a tap-in from second-half substitute Tom Barlow. 
 
From that point on, NCFC earned the better of the chances but was unable to find a second goal. 

Up Next: 
A trip to Kentucky to take on Louisville City FC on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET awaits NCFC. The match was originally scheduled for March 24 but couldn’t be played because of poor field conditions. 

In June, NCFC earned a 2-2 draw at home against Louisville City, as Daniel Rios recorded a brace to help his team earn a point. Louisville City (16W-6L-9D) is in third place in the Eastern Conference with 57 points.

NCFC went into the halftime break down a goal but received a boost when Red Bulls II’s Bertrand-Abang was shown a red card following an off-the-ball incident after the halftime whistle. 

Energized by its unexpected man-advantage, NCFC came out flying to start the second half. The team’s stretch of offensive pressure was made worthwhile by Bekker’s match-tying goal in the 52nd minute. 

After receiving a cross from Zach Steinberger, Bekker finished from close range as his shot from the right side of the box deflected off the left crossbar into the net. The goal was Bekker’s third in two games. 

In the 63rd minute, a menacing ball sent in by Bekker from the corner flag produced a jumble in the box, and Steven Miller nearly scored from the ground, but Red Bulls II’s Louro reacted quickly and blocked the effort. 
 
Miller remained active in the NCFC attack and played in a great ball to Ewolo, who headed the shot on target in the 75 minute. Unfortunately for the NCFC striker, his pacey header went right to Louro. 
 
Against the run of play, Red Bulls II retook the lead in the 78th minute with a tap-in from second-half substitute Tom Barlow. 
 
From that point on, NCFC earned the better of the chances but was unable to find a second goal. 

Up Next: 
A trip to Kentucky to take on Louisville City FC on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET awaits NCFC. The match was originally scheduled for March 24 but couldn’t be played because of poor field conditions. 

In June, NCFC earned a 2-2 draw at home against Louisville City, as Daniel Rios recorded a brace to help his team earn a point. Louisville City (16W-6L-9D) is in third place in the Eastern Conference with 57 points.

CARY, N.C. (September 29, 2018) – Kyle Bekker involved himself in every goal and North Carolina FC overcame a halftime deficit to pick up three important points in the USL playoff race with a 3-2 win over the Richmond Kickers Saturday night at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. 

With the victory, the team’s third in its past four matches, NCFC (12W-11L-8D) moved into a tie with Ottawa Fury FC for the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference.

In one of his best games of the season, Bekker scored NCFC’s opening goal, provided the assist on the second and then notched the game-winner.

“We made it difficult for ourselves, but the response second half was superb,” NCFC head coach Colin Clarke said. “Down 2-1, and you’re sitting there, as we talked in the locker room, the season’s on the line right here. And I thought the response was superb.”

After a promising start by NCFC, the visitors struck first, as Prince Agyemang gave Richmond a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.  

Five minutes later, Bekker nearly offered a quick reply, but his shot from outside of the box sailed just right of the post. 

Eventually, Bekker’s persistence would pay off. Positioned near the back post, the Canadian midfielder saw a deflected cross from Zach Steinberger fall to his feet after it was parried by Richmond’s Spangenberg. 

From just a few yards out on the left, Bekker quickly fired on target to put NCFC on the board.

Right before the halftime break, the Kickers regained the advantage courtesy of Heviel Cordoves, who found the back of the net in the 44th minute. 

Two minutes into first-half stoppage time, NCFC forward Donovan Ewolo headed to center back Wuilito Fernandes, who had a good look at goal from close range but fired high. 

Out of the halftime break, NCFC earned the bulk of the scoring chances. 

In the 54th minute, Aaron Guillen nearly notched his first goal of the season, but saw his pace-filled shot partially blocked by Spangenberg as the ball rolled to the right of the goal.

Having received a crossfield pass from Tiyi Shipalane, Bekker cut inside from the left flank and released a bending shot that evaded Spangenberg and rolled into the right side of the net. 

In possession of the lead, NCFC was able to see the result out, thanks in large part to the work of goalkeeper Alex Tambakis. 

In the 80th minute, Richmond substitute Yudai Imura found himself in on goal, but his shot was turned away by Tambakis, who made a terrific foot save.

NCFC will conclude its home slate against New York Red Bulls II on Saturday, October 6, at 7 p.m. ET at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. 

In August, Ewolo’s 90th-minute strike earned NCFC a 2-2 draw against the Red Bulls in Montclair, N.J.

Saturday’s win marked the fourth time NCFC won when conceding first.

– Saturday’s match was a homecoming for Richmond’s Brian Shriver, who played for the then-RailHawks from 2012-13 and rejoined the team for another stint in 2016.
