North Carolina FC (1W-1D-1L; 4 pts) is ready to continue the 2017 NASL season and their championship push against Miami FC in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. match at Riccardo Silva Stadium. The game serves as NCFC’s second match against Miami FC (1W-1D-1L; 4 pts) this season. The club is currently unbeaten at home in 2017, which is something they are no stranger to, and is looking to take that success to the road. 
 
Matt Fondy, Tiyi Shipalane, Nazmi Albadawi and Lance Laing have provided the club its first goals of 2017, with offensive production coming from numerous sources. NCFC is currently tied with the Indy Eleven for the most goals in the Spring Season, with five. Additionally, Fondy is currently tied with three other players to lead the League in goals.

Lance Laing is coming off his first goal of 2017 with his tally against FC Edmonton. The Jamaica native is playing in his first season with the club and is already making an impact. His free-kick goal in the match was deemed the NASL Play of the Week after he stunned Edmonton goalkeeper, Chris Konopka, with his left-footed shot. The midfielder has also notched an assist within his two starts for NCFC, and is someone to keep an eye on, as he has been named to the NASL Best XI three times in his career.
 
#10 Kwadwo Poku
Kwadwo Poku has made three starts for Miami FC this season, logging one goal and 250 minutes. The Ghana native was named to the NASL Team of the Week in Week 2 for his team-high four scoring chances and completion of 24 out of 26 passes against the club’s match against the New York Cosmos. The midfielder has scored in two of Miami FC’s last three matches against NCFC.

NORTH CAROLINA FC DOMINATES IN 3-1 HOME WIN OVER FC EDMONTON

Cary NC (April 15, 2017) – North Carolina FC (1W-1D-1L; 4 pts) remains unbeaten at home with a Saturday night 3-1 win against FC Edmonton (0W-0D-3L; 0 pts) at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. NCFC goals were provided by Lance Laing, Nazmi Albadawi and Matt Fondy in the commanding performance.

"I'm happy for everyone involved," said Head Coach Colin Clarke. "The women winning, us winning, it has been a good, positive weekend." 
 
Ready to grab control of the game early, North Carolina FC put the pressure on FC Edmonton right at kickoff. Lance Laing gave NCFC a quick lead in the 4th minute with a highlight reel worthy free kick that rocketed over Edmonton goalkeeper Chris Konopka.
 
Looking to add on, the always dangerous Matt Fondy had a chance in the 18thminute, as his left-footed shot flew just wide of the top left corner.
 
Not slowing down, the club added another tally in the 23rd minute with Nazmi Albadawi’s first goal of the season. The midfielder carried the ball for 50 yards and found the back of the net from the bottom right corner after he fired a low, powerful shot.
 
NCFC’s strong efforts in the first half showed, as the club outshot Edmonton 8-5, securing a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.
 
The club had another quick goal upon return for the second half, with Fondy’s second goal of the season in the 48th minute. The forward found Steven Miller’s cross to give his club a 3-1 lead and become NCFC’s current leading goal scorer.
 
Not a club to sit on a lead, Laing was looking for his second goal of the season, and NCFC’s fourth of the night, in the 51st minute as the Jamaican forced Konopka to make a save in the bottom left corner.
 
Though NCFC continued to attack, Edmonton broke through in the 72nd minute with a goal from Tomi Ameobi, as the forward slipped a rebounded shot past Brian Sylvestre denying him the shutout.
 
Worth noting, North Carolina FC amateur signee and United States U18 standout, Jose Carranza, made his debut for the club as he subbed in for Laing in the 75thminute.
 
Overall, North Carolina FC secured three points for their first home win of the season, and outshot FC Edmonton 15-12.

"We knew we would cause them [Edmonton] problems," Clarke said. "We move the ball very well and create a lot of good stuff in the first and second half."

The club is currently unbeaten at home in 2017, which is something they are no stranger to, as NCFC went unbeaten at home for a large portion of the 2016 NASL Fall Season.
 
Matt Fondy and Tiyi Shipalane have provided the club its first two goals of 2017, with Fondy’s tally coming in the club’s March 25 1-1 home opening draw against Miami FC, and Shipalane’s goal coming in the club’s most recent match against the San Francisco Deltas. Both players have been consistent offensive forces for NCFC in the past, and look to be picking up right where they left off.
 
FC Edmonton is matching up with NCFC for the first time this season, and most recently played to an April 8 1-0 loss against the Jacksonville Armada. Last year, NCFC and Edmonton played in three tight, competitive matches that all ended in a 1-0 result.

Last Time Out:
North Carolina FC is coming off their first loss of the season, a 3-1 result against the San Francisco Deltas. NCFC’s lone goal came in the 23rd minute, as the away team struck first, with a tally from Tiyi Shipalane.  
 
Though North Carolina continued to have chances, it was San Francisco that struck next, with an equalizer coming from Tommy Heinemann in the last few minutes of the first half. Despite increased pressure from NCFC after the return, the Deltas scored two goals in the second half, with a Pablo Dyego goal in the 82nd minute and another Heinemann goal in the 90th.  

Players to watch
#11 Tiyi Shipalane
Tiyi Shipalane is coming off his first goal of 2017 with his tally against the San Francisco Deltas. The South African is playing in his sixth season with the club and has been deemed the “human highlight reel” for his 24 goals with NCFC, so far. In 2015, the midfielder had nine assists, putting him at the top of the League’s assist table. He has become a staple to the organization and has remained a fan favorite in his years with the team.  
 
#6 Nik Ledgerwood
Nik Ledgerwood, the new captain of FC Edmonton and a staple of the midfield, played his first season with the club last year, as he made 29 regular season appearances. A consistent player for Canada on the international level, the Alberta native has made 49 appearances for the senior team. Last season, Ledgerwood had two goals and 25 shots in his 29 appearances.

The game serves as NCFC’s second match in front of the NCFC faithful. The club is currently unbeaten at home in 2017, which is something they are no stranger to, as NCFC went unbeaten at home for a large portion of the 2016 NASL Fall Season.
 
Matt Fondy and Tiyi Shipalane have provided the club its first two goals of 2017, with Fondy’s tally coming in the club’s March 25 1-1 home opening draw against Miami FC, and Shipalane’s goal coming in the club’s most recent match against the San Francisco Deltas. Both players have been consistent offensive forces for NCFC in the past, and look to be picking up right where they left off.
 
FC Edmonton is matching up with NCFC for the first time this season, and most recently played to an April 8 1-0 loss against the Jacksonville Armada. Last year, NCFC and Edmonton played in three tight, competitive matches that all ended in a 1-0 result.

Last Time Out:
North Carolina FC is coming off their first loss of the season, a 3-1 result against the San Francisco Deltas. NCFC’s lone goal came in the 23rd minute, as the away team struck first, with a tally from Tiyi Shipalane.  
 
Though North Carolina continued to have chances, it was San Francisco that struck next, with an equalizer coming from Tommy Heinemann in the last few minutes of the first half. Despite increased pressure from NCFC after the return, the Deltas scored two goals in the second half, with a Pablo Dyego goal in the 82nd minute and another Heinemann goal in the 90th.  

Players to watch
#11 Tiyi Shipalane
Tiyi Shipalane is coming off his first goal of 2017 with his tally against the San Francisco Deltas. The South African is playing in his sixth season with the club and has been deemed the “human highlight reel” for his 24 goals with NCFC, so far. In 2015, the midfielder had nine assists, putting him at the top of the League’s assist table. He has become a staple to the organization and has remained a fan favorite in his years with the team.  
 
#6 Nik Ledgerwood
Nik Ledgerwood, the new captain of FC Edmonton and a staple of the midfield, played his first season with the club last year, as he made 29 regular season appearances. A consistent player for Canada on the international level, the Alberta native has made 49 appearances for the senior team. Last season, Ledgerwood had two goals and 25 shots in his 29 appearances.

RECAP: NCFC SUFFER FIRST LOSS OF 2017

Cary, N.C. (April 9, 2017)- North Carolina FC (0-1-1, 1 pt.) dropped a heartbreaking 3-1 result to the San Francisco Deltas (1-1-0, 4 pts.) on Saturday night at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, Ca. The Deltas responded to a Tiyi Shipalane goal with tallies by Tommy Heinemann (2) and Pablo Dyego.

NCFC came out of the gates strong, trying to control the pace and create chances. The first opportunity came in the 6th minute as Shipalane crossed a ball in the box looking for Matt Fondy's diving head only to see the Delta's defense deflect the ball into corner. 

The lone North Carolina goal came in the 23rd minute after a cross from Steven Miller found Peiser and rebounded towards Brian Shriver whose subsequent shot was deflected by the San Francisco defense, the South African picked up the clearance and shot it into the top right corner for the lead. 

The Deltas responded immediately with a Kyle Bekker shot from distance but Brian Sylvetre, who made five saves on the night, was quick to hold on to the ball.

The remainder of the first 45 was played mostly in front of San Francisco's goal, with a chance from Shipalane in the 29th and a shot from Matt Fondy in the 31st both thwarted by Peiser. 

The Delta's found the equalizer in the waning moments of the first half when Heinemann split the NCFC defense and poked the ball past Sylvestre to send the teams to the locker room all tied up. 

Coming out at the half, NCFC tried to apply more pressure looking for the advantage, and the tactic almost paid dividends in the 54th minute when James Marcelin intercepted a cross from Christian Ibeagha, but his shot sailed barely past the far post. 

In the 68th minute it was NCFC Captain Nazmi Albadawi's turn to look for the go-ahead tally but his shot was saved by Peiser. 

The Deltas found the advantage in the 82nd minute when Dyego lobbed the ball far post from the top corner of the box over Sylvestre and into the back of the net. Eight minutes later, the home team would add an insurance goal with Heinemann chipping a Dyego through ball over North Carolina's keeper. 

NCFC continued to try and shorten the gap but a stoppage time shot by second-half substiute Billy Schuler was cleared by Peiser, fixing the result at 3-1.

NORTH CAROLINA FC U23 ANNOUNCES OPEN TRYOUTS

Cary, NC (April 7, 2017) – North Carolina FC U23 of the Premier Development League (PDL) team will hold open tryouts on Wednesday, April 26 and Thursday, April 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Tryouts are open to soccer players aged 18 to 23 years old. Head coach Dewan Bader and his staff will evaluate players in advance of the PDL season which begins in May.

Bader, who also serves as assistant coach for the North Carolina FC NASL team, guided the U23s to three consecutive Region III titles (2011-2013) and two National Championships (2011, 2013) while competing in the USASA U-23 Men’s Cup.  Joining him will be longtime U23 coaches Luis Satorra and Rick King, as well as Zack Schilawski and NCFC assistant coach Michael Milazzo.

NC COURAGE DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY TAKES FIELD THIS FALL

Sean Nahas Named Director of NC Courage Academy

Cary, NC (April 6, 2017) – The North Carolina Football Club is excited to announce the launch of the NC Courage Girls U.S. Soccer Development Academy (DA). This is an important addition to the largest youth-to-professional club in the country. It will create a clear path for the identification and development of young female players and facilitate the development of homegrown professional players for the North Carolina Courage pro team. Beginning July 1, veteran youth coach Sean Nahas will direct the Girls’ DA teams as they prepare to take the field this fall wearing the same crest and colors as the NWSL team.

The Girls’ DA will maximize player development with a 10-month training program, professionalized coaching, and the opportunity for youth players to train with the pro team. NC Courage Academy is one of 69 clubs that will be competing in the inaugural Girls’ DA season this fall. Player trials are currently underway to field U-14, U-15, U-16/17, and U-18/19 teams, which will compete in the southeast division featuring teams including IMG Academy, Charlotte Soccer Academy, Boca United FC, Concorde Fire, and NTH Tophat among others.

Nahas is no stranger to U.S. Soccer. Currently, he serves as an assistant coach with the U-20 U.S. Women’s National Team – a team that that won the U20 Women’s CONCACAF Championship (2015) and was a semi-finalist at the 2016 U20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea. He was also a staff coach for the U-14 U.S. Youth National Team (2011-2013) and served as a U.S. National Team youth scout during that same time. Nahas knows the ins and outs of the U.S. Soccer development model, player pathways, and the expertise to create the best training environment for NC Courage Girls’ DA players.

“Sean is a very successful coach and has proven himself in every position he has held,” said North Carolina Football Club President and GM Curt Johnson. “His experience with the U.S. National Teams, paired with his knowledge of the Triangle area and North Carolina youth soccer, is an added benefit to our goal of developing young female players in our community. The NC Courage DA teams will be able to identify and develop top local talent for years to come. In addition, we look forward to collaborating with NWSL to develop the league’s first homegrown player rules.”

In addition to his U.S. Soccer coaching responsibilities, he has dedicated the past 13 years developing players across all ages and levels of play at the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL). He helped more than 20 CASL female players make their way to U.S. youth and full national teams and more than 100 players sign on to play in college. In addition, he developed a club wide curriculum and player development pathway for players ages 8-19.

“I am very excited about this new opportunity for the growth of the female game in our area and across the country,” said Nahas. “I am honored to have been asked to oversee the Girls’ Development Academy and continue the development pathway for female players in our area.”

He was also a staff coach for the U-14 U.S. Youth National Team (2011-2013) and served as a U.S. National Team youth scout during that same time. Nahas knows the ins and outs of the U.S. Soccer development model, player pathways, and the expertise to create the best training environment for NC Courage Girls’ DA players.

In addition to his U.S. Soccer coaching responsibilities, he has dedicated the past 13 years developing players across all ages and levels of play at the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL). He helped more than 20 CASL female players make their way to U.S. youth and full national teams and more than 100 players sign on to play in college. In addition, he developed a club wide curriculum and player development pathway for players ages 8-19.

“I am very excited about this new opportunity for the growth of the female game in our area and across the country,” said Nahas. “I am honored to have been asked to oversee the Girls’ Development Academy and continue the development pathway for female players in our area.”
