CARY, NC. (July 26, 2023) — North Carolina FC took down top of the table Northern Colorado 2-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park. North Carolina ended the 14-game unbeaten streak for the Hailstorm making their record 9-4-4.
North Carolina FC battled through a tough first half, as Northern Colorado was playing aggressive and received three yellow cards. There was an early chance for North Carolina when Oalex Anderson got fouled in the box to give North Carolina the penalty kick. Rafa Mentzingen took the shot only for the Hailstorm goalkeeper Lalo Delgado to hit it away. However Louis Perez took a free kick from the eighteen-yard box, that hit off Northern Colorado’s keeper into the net making it 1-0 right before halftime.
The second half of the match Northern Colorado held 70% of possession, making it extremely difficult for the North Carolina defense. However North Carolina FC doubled their lead in extra time at the end of the match after Chris Lue Young hit a long ball over the top to Anderson who dribbled around the Northern Colorado goalkeeper for his 10th goal of the season. North Carolina’s goalkeeper Trevor Mulqueen recorded his first clean sheet of the season. North Carolina will now go on a road stretch with a 5 match unbeaten streak.
