
Forward Brian Shriver scored twice to lead the Carolina RailHawks to the top of the North American Soccer League 2013 Fall Season standings in a 3-0 victory over the visiting New York Cosmos and was named the NASL Player of the Week.
Shriver opened the scoring for Carolina in the eighth minute when midfielder Ty Shipalane charged forward to with Zack Schilawski who fed the ball to Shriver, who in turn one-touched the pass into the net to put the RailHawks ahead 1-0.
“It was a great win over the weekend and I am glad I was able to contribute,” said Shriver, whose two goals on Saturday means he leads the NASL Golden Boot race with 11 strikes this season. “Since the spring we have focused on taking our chances and capitalizing on those opportunities. We were able to do those things on Saturday night and got the result.”

Shriver added his second goal 20 minutes later when Cosmos defender Hunter Gorskie misplaced a back pass, allowing him to take possession in the Cosmos’ box with only goalkeeper Kyle Reynish to beat. Shriver took a delicate touch around the keeper and slotted the ball into the open net. He has now scored twice on four occasions in league play in 2013.
“It is a well deserved award for Brian with two big goals on Saturday,” RailHawks coach Colin Clarke added on Shriver’s performance. “He has been working hard and scoring goals all year so it is great for him to get the recognition he deserves.”
The Clearwater, Florida, native was drafted by FC Dallas of MLS in 2009 but turned down the contract to finish his studies at University of North Carolina. He later signed with Miami FC, which later became the NASL’s Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Shriver scored four goals in his first year and then 11 more in 2011 during the Strikers run to the NASL Finals.
