
CARY, N.C. (Jan. 12, 2018) – North Carolina FC will usher in a new era at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, March 17 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the club’s 2018 USL debut. Further details on the match including kickoff time and ticket info will be released soon.
“It’s a change for us, going to the USL, and it’s one that we’re all looking forward to,” said North Carolina FC Head Coach Colin Clarke. “We’re excited for our first game and it’s nice to have the first game at home and with a team we have history against. We’ve played a lot of good games against Tampa in the past. They’re a very good team and well run. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
In addition to finding out the club’s home-opener opponent, the USL released conference alignment for the 2018 season today. As expected, North Carolina FC will be in the Eastern Conference.
North Carolina FC has enjoyed a strong record in league home openers, posting a 5W-1L-5D record in home openers since the team’s first season in 2007. NCFC will look to get started on the front foot in 2018, as it looks to make Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park a home fortress.
North Carolina FC and Tampa Bay have enjoyed a long-standing series rivalry that dates back to 2010. NCFC has enjoyed the better record in the series history, posting a 10W-6L-9D ledger against the Rowdies. North Carolina has won two of the last three matches against Tampa Bay, with 3-1 and 4-1 victories in 2016.
The Rowdies roster is highlighted by former NCFC fan favorite Akira Fitzgerald and former England International Joe Cole. Fitzgerald starred with NCFC for six seasons from 2011-2016, appearing in 87 matches across all competitions. Cole joined Tampa in 2016 after a highly successful career in the English Premier League.
North Carolina FC’s growing roster currently includes goalkeepers Austin Guerrero and George Marks, defenders Peabo Doue, Steven Miller and D.J. Taylor and midfielders Austin da Luz, Marcel Kandziora and Ebe Kudolo.
