
DURHAM, N.C. (June 20, 2018)– North Carolina FC U-23 jumped back to the top of the PDL’s South Atlantic standings as it defeated local rival Tobacco Road FC 3-1 Wednesday night at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
The match was the third and final meeting of the regular season between the local rivals and gave NCFC a 2W-1L record advantage.

The two teams came out of the gates quickly, producing an exciting game. NCFC’s hard work on the attacking end almost came to fruition in the 15th minute, as Sheriff Secka found himself free just inside the left corner of the box. He laced a right-footed volley that rose above the reach of the Tobacco Road keeper and skimmed the top of the crossbar.
However, just 10 minutes later, Tobacco Road FC converted its chance and took a 1-0 lead curtsey of Mustapha Wadda.
Despite trailing for most the game, North Carolina FC closed out the match with a furious rally, netting three goals in the final 21 minutes of play.
Tressor Mbuyu kickstarted the comeback with a goal in the 69th minute. Mbuyu created separation inside the box and rifled a left-footed shot across the face of goal that found its way into the bottom right corner.
In the 83rd minute, substitute Jelani Pieters gave NCFC U-23 a 2-1 advantage after dribbling past a Tobacco Road defender and slotting his shot in the right side of the netting.
NCFC U-23 firmly secured the victory in 90th minute as Mbuyu netted his first brace of the season, putting away a loose ball from a corner kick that the Tobacco Road defenders could not clear.

NCFC U-23’s Caleb Duvernay, Nick Retzlaff, Jose Morales, Jamil Gracia and George Marks all came up through the NCFC Youth Academy.
Additionally, Ian Bennet, Clayton Sparks, Pa-Alieu Ann, Casey Brady, Dean Rutherford and Chase Rhode played in the youth ranks with either Triangle Futbol Club Alliance or Capital Area Soccer League, predecessors to NCFC Youth.
The connection between the two clubs runs even deeper with Tobacco Road having multiple former NCFC Academy players currently on its roster. Ryan Cretens, Delasi Batsi, Kellen Foster, Huntley Munn, Joseph Buete, Dylan Chain and Ben Fisher all played with the NCFC Youth Academy system.
Alex Comsia, Fernando Castellanos and Ade Taiwo recently played for NCFC U-23 before making the jump to TRFC. Brad Ruuhak was a member of NCFC’s 2017 first team before joining TRFC.
With the win, NCFC U-23 holds a 5W-2L-3D record with 18 points on the season and sits at the top of the PDL’s South Atlantic standings.
