There’s no denying it: You’re desperate for live sports. And while the USL Championship season remains on pause, there is good news for North Carolina FC fans – the 2020 USL eCup: Rocket League Edition is beginning soon!
Starting on Wednesday, April 1, NCFC will take part in the 32-team gaming tournament, made up of clubs from the USL Championship and USL League One. All matches will be streamed on ESPN3 and NCFC’s time in the four-week tournament begins on Wednesday against Reno 18568 FC in the first of three group stage matchups. NCFC will also face Louisville City on April 6 and Tacoma Defiance FC on April 9.
According to the USL, “Rocket League has become one of the premier games in esports. With a head-to-head format that models soccer in many ways, the game sees players navigate their vehicles to drive the ball toward the net and score goals.”
Representing NCFC in the tournament will be two superfans from the Oak City Supporters: Ryan Jernigan and Drew Rutledge.
The group stage has a best-of-three series format between teams, with the winner of each series earning three points in the group table. At the end of the group stage, the top two finishers will advance to the knockout stage.
Additionally, each team playing in the tournament will have the chance to highlight a local charity of its choosing, with donation links featured during streams of matches on Twitch and on USL websites. NCFC is proud to be partnering with the North Carolina FC Youth Financial Aid Fund for the USL eCup.
