NC Courage Secures Home Playoff Game With 1-0 Win Over Houston

Sep 9, 2017

Cary, NC (Sept. 9, 2017) – The North Carolina Courage defeated the Houston Dash 1-0 on Saturday night behind a goal by Kristen Hamilton. With the win, the NC Courage secure home field advantage for the playoffs and will host a semifinal game on Sunday, Oct. 8 at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. More details on opponent, kickoff time and individual ticket on-sale date will be announced soon. NC Courage season ticket members already have the game included in their package and will use the Game “A” ticket.

The game started with back and forth action as both teams tried to break the deadlock. The Courage came close to a tally in the 3rd minute as Jessica McDonald crossed a low ball into the box looking for Lynn Williams, but the Houston defense quickly deflected in corner.
Just a few minutes later, in the 14th, Sam Mewis sent a high-flying cross towards Williams, but Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell came off her line and out of the box to clear it into the sidelines.
The goal came in the 26th minute after a throw in by McDonald was flicked on by Abby Erceg’s head to Hamilton’s feet. The forward deftly sent it past Campbell into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The NC Courage looked like it had added an insurance goal in the 32nd as McDonald found the back of the net but the play was deemed offside and the goal disallowed.
The NC Courage continued to look for the elusive second tally, coming out of the gates strong in the second half. A Hamilton shot sailed barely above the crossbar in the 54th minute as the team continued to pepper the Houston goal with shots.
In the end, Hamilton’s first-half tally proved to be enough for the win.
Next, the NWSL takes a break for the women’s international FIFA break. Following the break, the NC Courage will travel to New Jersey to face Sky Blue FC on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. ET.
