NC Courage Increases League Lead After Victory in Kansas City

Aug 10, 2017

Cary, N.C. (August 10, 2017)- A late goal by Lynn Williams locked in three points for the NC Courage while on the road against FC Kansas City on Thursday night. The match was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 22, but was postponed to tonight due to inclement weather in the area.
The opening minutes of the match saw equal efforts from both sides. NC Courage goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland was tested in the 12th minute by Maegan Kelly, but handled Kansas City’s attempt with ease.
Rowland continued her solid decision making as she came off her line to snuff Kansas City’s chances in the 16th and 18th minutes. The goalkeeper then made yet another phenomenal save in the 26th minute to keep Desiree Scott’s shot out of the net.
The Courage found its offensive stride in the 28th minute of the match when Williams sent a shot just over the crossbar. Just three minutes later, Kristen Hamilton had her chance on goal, but after shaking her defender, her shot skidded wide.
The first 45 minutes closed out with the score equal at zero, but the NC Courage lead in shots 13-3.
The team came out of the locker room with energy, and Williams looked for the first goal of the match one minute into the second half; however, the shot that she took at a difficult angle went wide of the goal.
Jaelene Hinkle created another key opportunity for the Courage in the 57th minute. Hinkle’s cross found Williams’ head in the box, but the forward’s attempt went wide again.
In the 62nd minute, Sam Mewis had a dangerous opportunity as she ripped a shot from outside the box. While the shot had plenty of pace, it was slightly off target.
The NC Courage’s second half subs, Denise O’Sullivan and Jessica McDonald, brought a spark into the match. McDonald nearly put one away in the 74th minute after beating her defender and placing a shot towards the bottom corner, but it rolled wide.
The Courage’s relentless attack finally paid off in the 86th minute when Williams capitalized on a Taylor Smith cross that was deflected by McDonald to find the game winning goal for the second game in a row.
With that goal, the Courage took all three points in Kansas City, increasing its league lead to four points. The team continues its road trip this weekend as they head to Seattle to take on the Reign on Sunday, August 13 at 9 pm ET.
